27/08/2011 Day 18. Bohinj Bistrica
Today I woke up the coldest of the trip. My feet felt like they were going to fall off! We got ready and headed for the early bus into Bled at 8.56. We arrived at Lake Bled about half an hour after. As we were walking around we stumbled across a sign advertising the world rowing championships were starting this weekend! What a coincidence, first the red bull air race now this. We first went to hire a rowing boat for an hour on the lake. We managed to find one big enough to take all 5 of us. It was a little unsteady when we were moving about and when we were changing "drivers" we really nearly tipped it over. I started the rowing and my god was it hard. I've used rowing machines but never tried real rowing, it's so much harder, especially when lugging 4 other lads in a wooden piece of crap. The lake was gorgeous, clear water again, almost as good as plitvice lakes. We rowed over to the island in lake bled with the church and took a few pictures. We spent about 1 hour on the boat. When we retuned to the little harbour I was the last one to get out, I so nearly fell in again, it was good to get back onto dry land. We walked a bit around the lake to where people were getting in and sunbathing. Sam and Aaron jumped straight in and had a swim. Me Nick and Dave sat on the bank and soaked up the sunshine. I went red today! We walked around towards the bid station and watched the start of 2 races, one of the single men's rowing and the second was the dual women's race, one boat was Great Britain, I gave them a shout! We went for a wall around a little Market stall, to me it was just shops of rubbish I wasn't interested in. We caught the bus back to Bohinj (said boheeney I think) and had an ask about rafting, canyoning, kayaking etc. We decided to do the canyoning, 3 hours of following a river down natural slides, jumping off rocks into pools and abseiling down cliffs. It was brilliant, so worth the €50 we spent on it. We were with two other people doing it too, they were from Belgium, the woman was a maths teacher, we don't know what the guy did, don't think he spoke too much English. Just as we arrived back the heavens truly opened. We had to run back to the camper to get some money and back, got absolutely soaked and sod's law was obeyed, just as we got back to the building, it stopped. We got all the pictures that were taken by the guides, and the videos, put onto a disc so they'll be surfacing on Facebook when we get back. We then thought about food, starving after the canyoning. We found a place and I had some recjinic or spelled something like that. Meat on skewers with paprika and raw onion with rice, it was really nice. Finished off the night with some Karl Pilkington again now tucking into bed with socks tonight so I don't freeze. Heading to Austria tomorrow morning to find a mountain with a 10km long glacier sliding down the side of it. Over and out.
