Mui Ne is a little bit like Nha Trang but a lot nicer and more chilled out. We had a few days here. It was sad to say goodbye to Sang and Quan and we wish we could have done a few more days travelling around with them, but we were also looking forward to meeting up with Dean and Sarah (The Toops) again. They had already arrived when we got there and they were staying down the road in a posh beach resort. Our hostel was nice and we were right on the beach but once we found out guests were free to visit at the Toops hotel, we just went there and chilled out with them in the pool and on the beach. Thanks Toop's!
The bar next door to our hostel was pretty chilled out at night and always had some live music on each night. We all went there pretty much every night. This is where we had some amazing burgers. Me and Dean had a MAN burger each with was a double cheeseburger weighting in at half a kilo...thats 17.6 oz's of meat! We destroyed it no problem. Although it did fill me up for at least 2 days...well till tea time the next night!
One of the days there when chilling on the beach with the Toops. Dean had been to the shop and bought some boogie boards, as he'd been dying to try it seen as though there were some good waves there. Him and Sarah went for about 20 mins. It was funny watching them both and hopefully they're not going to take it up as a profession! They both came back knackered so we both had a go after them. I was awesome at it naturally; I was at one with the waves. Hilary struggled a bit, but I think this was due to a bit of bad luck, as one of the waves pulled down her bikini top a little bit and at that exact moment a jelly fish decided to sting her on her boob! Hilarious, but also painful! I offered to wee on her, but she declined.
All four of us went on a "tour" with our hostel to some of the surrounding sites. We all just wanted to go to the sand dunes and do a bit of sand surfing. But we thought we might as well go to a few other things. First up was the fairy springs. Our driver had told us not to pay anyone as it was free, but when we set off walking up the river a little boy was leading us. He wasn't a guide as he didn't tell us anything about it, and then made us climb this big sand mountain for the view. As soon as we got to the top he asked for money as he had to go now as he was due back at school. One girl in our group paid him...we gave a couple of pence and he wanted more. We told him no way as we didn't ask you to come. He went back to "school". We walked a bit more up the springs to try and find the waterfall on our own but time was running out so we headed back to the jeep. When we got back to the start of the fairy springs, there was our "guide" back at "school"....gambling school! He and all his mates were in a circle gambling with the money he'd just conned from us!
We then went to the fishing village, which were basically just some boats in the sea. No guide. We then eventually went to the sand dunes. They were ok. We hired the plastic sheets/sledges and walked around trying to find some big enough and steep enough sand dunes to go down. The biggest problem, was when you found one, you had to walk/climb up it first. I think we managed maybe one good slide down a sand dune between us all. The rest we had to push our selves down with our hands and we were just sinking into the sand rather than sliding on it!
Again we had a really good time with the Toops and we pretty much just hung around with them, riding off the back of their posh hotel pretending we were staying there. We're meeting up with them again at our next destination, Saigon.
Things we learnt:
- Its a lot nicer than Nha Trang
- Fasten your swimming attire securely otherwise jelly fish will make you pay!
- Half a kilo of meat with cheese and bread is awesome
- I'm a natural surfer/boogie boarder...just need the body for it now
- Sand dunes are fun to go down, but not to go up
- Watch out for kids going to gambling school!
