With one full day in Pai we set an alarm and were up early to make the most of it. We took a wonder into town, from our guesthouse this took us about 10 minutes even though someone told us last night it would take us an hour! Maybe he was trying to scam a taxi ride from us. We grabbed a light breakfast at a cool little cafe and a good English breakfast tea! Full up and ready to start the day we went to a enquire about cycle hire. Everyone in Pai rides scooters or mopeds and it's a big thing for tourists to, but Amy was nervous of this and after speaking to two girls at the cycle hire who said they'd done it but come off a few times and had given up we decided to stick with the safer leg powered set of wheels. We got our map and stuck our backpacks in our baskets and set off through town towards our marked route of waterfalls and hot springs.... Soon we were out of town and heading past the rolling mountains past some gorgeous little coffee shops (noted for the journey back). This was Half way to our first waterfall so I was thinking ah this isn't too bad we'll be there in no time... At least an hour later following a large number of big biiig hills, 4 new blisters, a numb bum, finding out my brakes didn't work well downhills, our faces getting redder and redder and loosing litres of water in the process, we weren't looking our finest, we finally hear the waterfall and realise the map says 'not to scale'.... Anyway we found it so we locked up our bikes to a sign that almost fell on top of them and climbed up to see it. It turned out not to really be a path at all a very slippery route with rocks and branches and shear drops, we made it about half way as the 'path' was getting narrower and narrower and more covered with vegetation which looked like an ideal home to some big spiders, we decided to turn around and head back... People at the bottom had told us it was beautiful at the top and it was quite gutting not to make it after our mission to get there, but I was quite happy to look at pictures online from our bungalow! Now my focus returned to the coffee shops, it was like my Mecca- that Ice cold vanilla coffee frappe kept me going up and down those hills in 28 deg heat!
So we only made it to one slightly disappointing waterfall but we saw some gorgeous scenery, burned a good few calories, the rain held out and that vanilla frappe was amazing!
