So second time lucky??(Not just bangkok but this blog, first time the computer turned off before i could save it, so here we go) After arriving from kho chang on the bus, where we had loads of leg room and reclining seats, we were dropped on the edge of kho san road, knowing there were loads of hotels and guesthouses to pick from, we started the compulsery search for a room that as allways lead us through rooms that were either way out of our price range, or that you cringed at the smell of mould before you got any where near the room, untill we were put on to the four suns village, that if be told was on the pricey side at400 bhat (less than 10 quid) but it did have A/C a TV and HOT WATER!! By the time we had dumped our bags and were heading back th kho san road, my back, which was aching due to a bad bed in kho chang, was now starting to become un-friendly, sending shooting pains down the back of one of my legs, i thought it will clear up all i need is a good night sleep in a soft bed. We walked the lengh of kho san being harrased and haranged the whole lengh, being offered every thing from cheap buckets to ping pong, we managed to resist everything but the pad thai, where we bumped in to Bree, Gee and Jamie from kho chang (small world) they, before we had chance to asked told us they needed a quiet night in to recover from the abuse of kho chang, not sure what they meant, i dont remember kho chang being abuseive, then again theres lots of kho chang i dont remember.
We said our goodbyes, as we would be leaving for the islands the next day, hug kisses all round and off for round three of kho san, which is a place that if visted once can seem loud, brash and chaotic, but if you go back several times you learn that kho san IS loud, brash and chaotic, but that what you go there for. After a couple of drinks, and my back making harder for me to sit comfterably, we strolloed (as say we, hev strolled as i had develloped a sort of odd hunched limp) back to the hotel to enjoy our over priced A/C and TV, after a hot shower.
Four o clock the next morning i was pacing the room trying not to wake hev up, my back had gone nucular, i couldn't stand, sit or lie with out being in a world of pain, so at eight we found ourselves in a walk in clinic, and me being sent to hospital in a cab paid for by the clinic, within two hours, i had been checked in with my own id card, sent to a specialist, been diagnosed with a trapped nerve in my lower back and been sent to pick up my drugs then was lead back to the waiting taxi, we were both stunned by the speed and eficency of the service, but then if youre paying, and it aint cheap, you would want it to be, so we may b**** and moan about the NHS but dont forget, ITS FREE!!
The plans for the islands in the south were put on hold, as i was told to take it easy for a couple of days, which is a problem, when your visa is running out and theres still loads to see, but my back didn't care about the visa or the islands, sadly it won, we spent the next two days figgiting in seats and warndering round whilst trying to eat (once again i say we, hev joined in with me so people didn't think i was weird)......(no she never, people thought i was weird) After a night sleep and some knock your socks off pain killers i felt good enough to travel, as long as i took a pill every four hours i felt like i was perminantly sozzelled, which made conversation a little hard till i got used to the effects.
I desided it was time to go see some more of thailand before it was to late, so we checked with the "BOOK" to find a quite seaside town, to spend some more time on the beach, the "BOOK" surgested hue hin, quite, local, sleepy seafood, winner??
We jumped in a tuk-tuk that told us if we went the TAT office first we would get chared ten bhat, if not it would be one hundred bhat, so we went the TAT (Travel And Tourist) office, The girl asked 'you want a hotel' 'no a train ticket' she pointed over the road as said' that where you get train tickets from' , we went out to pay the driver, who told us we wernt inside long enough, and the fare was now one hundred bhat, nope, we didnt agree and neither did the lady from the TAT office, who came out to tell the driver that we were only paying the agreed ten bhat. The train ride was comfortable, thanks largely to the pills. We came out of the station to a small number of taxi drivers all offering to run us any where one hundred bhat, so we walked, curiosly with my pack on my back felt great, not just because of the pills, i could still feel it through the pills, with the extra weight it actually felt good?? We soon discovered there is no low season in hue hin, and it aint cheap, we were lucky to find a room that was so nice for four hundred and fifty bhat a night (We paid less in bangkok which is the capital city, hue hin is a back water western family holiday resort) we were spoiled again with A/C , TV and more hot water. We ditched the bags and went to explore town, we were soon stunned at the prices of food and drinks, we thought the room prices were bad enough, but things were far more expensive than Bangkok, which made no sence to us at all, we found seven eleven for dinner, toasted sandwitches can never be overlooked as a tasty alternative to real food! That night we wandered down the road to find the cheap seafood we had read about, that like eveything else was to expensive for our budget, so back to seven, more toasted sandwitches, then on to a bar for a couple of games of pool and TWO bottles of COKE, after a couple of games we'd had enough and desided a bag of crisps and a HBO movie were the order of the day, the bill was more than we were paying for a room in kho chang!!
The next day was spent wandering on the beach, as this was free, it wasn't the right kinda day for sunbathing, fine sand, wind and sun tan lotion dont mix well, so we wandered through rock pools finding lions mane jelly fish, whitch i finaly got hev to touch (only the top where there are no stingers, dont worry i wasn't trying to get her to wear it as a face mask, or hit it with a spade) there were also octopie (are many octopusses octopie?? it just sounds wrong) which for some reason hev never held, i dont think i offered her one and she never asked. After a day of walking (thankfully hue hin has a huge beach) we were going to shower change and treat ourselves to a sub-way sandwitch dinner (second cheapest place to eat in town) then take full advantage of the 40 bhat a beer offer at one of the posh resturants (after the coke bill i checked with a chemist wether i could drink on my pills, i think he said yes,it sounded more yes than no to me) We drank slowly, whilst watching unknown tennis players at wimbledon and anoying watch sellers by being intrested but not buying any thing, and telling them i can get it cheaper in cambodia, the plans for leaving were simple, get up check out, breakfast at seven eleven and the bus to kanchanaburi to see the bridge over the river kwai, we fineshed our beers and went to the hotel to put our plan into action, it went smooth enough, except we arrived in kanchanaburi as it had gone dark, but that will have to wait for next time im afraid.
till then
