If it looks pretty, it doesn't mean it smells pretty.

The scenery in the Eduardo Avarao National Park is something to write home about. Hot geysers spurt boiling water from the earths core. A generous scattering of alpacas and volcanoes provides the backdrop - one volcano was even spewing smoke. And the dark blue lakes are so still they reflect the dusty pink flamingoes and snow capped mountains like mirrors. But, IMHO, the stench of Sulphur is not a great pairing for these visuals.

You might as well be walking on the moon.

After spending a night in a 'hotel' built entirely from salt and waking up at 4am to catch the sunrise, it takes a pretty hardcore photographer to capture the trick photography that the Bolivian salt flat is renowned for. Not sure we have quite mastered this skill yet. What is required is a lot of jumping about, posing on toy alpacas, sitting on the palm of someones hand, whispering into their ear while standing on their shoulder (think tinkerbell) etc etc and in the end you might end up with about 3 decent shots! Perhaps more impressive and definitely easier to capture, is the small island in the middle of the flats which has cactuses over 700 years old and loads of dried up coral. This is a memorable and surreal experience that the photos perhaps fail to capture.
