Beautiful! The town in Franz Josef is just like a little ski town (or how I imagine one to be), cept without the snow. The weather cooled down a bit here, so at last I had an excuse to look pasty white - honestly, you wouldn't believe I'd been away a month!
Knee was still playing up, so used the excuse to book me a scenic helicopter ride over the glaciers. Expensive - but a lot less painful! We were picked up at 7am, where the sun was still down, as we took off the sun just started to peek over the mountains. We got such amazing views and a strange inability to judge distances on the snow, thinking we were about to land, then realising that the other helicopters on the ice were about the size of matchbox cars.
As we went over the top of the mountain the wind picked up. I'll take turbulance in a plane over a helicopter anytime!
Finished off the day with a kayak trip over Lake Mapourika, which is so dark and still that you can see the refections of the moutains in some parts perfectly. We couldn't take our camera's as they'd no doubt drop in the water, so the guide took them for us. They are all terrible (of me)! But sure I will add them up anyway. After a 7.5k trip around the lake (and I wasn't last back!!) it only seemed right to congratulate myself with a pint or two at the bar. All in all, a good day!
