We had a lay in until 10am, we had our complimentary breakfast which was muesli with papaya and yoghurt. After breakfast we packed our stuff ready for our flight to Laos.
We had our last meal (lunch) in Thailand at 'Ratana's Kitchen' restaurant. Jay had crispy noodles with yellow curry, this was called 'Chiang Mai Noodles'. He also had a 'Leo Beer' with his meal. Helen had a 'Hawaiian Chicken Fried Rice' which had pineapple and cashew nuts in it. This last meal was very delicious.
On the way back to our accommodation, we pulled over a pick-up truck taxi (songtheaw), this was like a bigger version of a tuk tuk. We asked the driver how much it costs to get to Chiang Mai Airport. He said it costs 50 THB each (1 GBP each, Bargain!), we asked him to wait whilst Jay ran back to the guesthouse to get our backpacks.
It was a short journey to the airport, the aiport was small, clean and organised. We flew with Laos Airlines, the twin propellor plane left 20 minutes before schedule at 2.40pm. It was a comfortable flight journey that offered tasty snacks.
We arrived 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 3.45pm local time at Luang Prabang, Laos. (Laos is 7 hours ahead of UK time, the local currency used is Laos Kips, 13,000 LAK to 1 GBP). We had to complete a visa application form on arrival, this cost $35. There was a small queue and it was a smooth process in getting our visas.
After getting our baggage, we went straight to the Laos Airlines counter to book our flight from Vientiane (Capital of Laos) to Siem Reap, Cambodia so that we know that we are going there. This cost us 101 GBP each, this was a good price as it was much more to book it in the UK.
After booking our flight, we went to the Information Desk at the airport to enquire about accommodation in Laos. We chose what appeared to be a nice guesthouse called 'Sok Dee' for 20 USD/160,000 LAK per night. We got a taxi there for 50 LAK. The guesthouse was beautiful, it was mainly made out of wood and had a balcony overlooking an open air common room. When we arrived we were shown our room, we were more than happy with the room and agreed to stay for the night. The owner said we can pay when we check out, which we were surprised about because everywhere else we stayed, we had to pay upfront.
On the way to getting some dinner, we started to soak in the atmosphere of Luang Prabang, it was clean, quiet, laid back, the humidity was alot higher than Chiang Mai. The speed limit for vehicles was slow, 20/30 km per hour. The traffic volume was very low. There were many cute and pretty streets and alley ways. The people aslo seemed friendly and trusting, they were also sofly spoken.
We had dinner at the 'Coconut' restaurant, Jay had Laos Ginger Chicken with sticky rice, it was a very big portion. Helen had Laos Fried Noodles with Chicken. We enjoyed our dinner, it was delicious.
After dinner, we walked to The Night Market which was not too far.It was small compared to the Night Market in Chiang Mai. Helen bought some Laos rice wine for her dad and a bracelet made from a specific type of white stone found in the Mekhong River. Jay bought some rice wine for himself and his friend Steve.
To finish the night off, we relaxed in the 'Blue Ice Bar', which was right by the Mekhong River. Jay had a Beer Laos and later on had a Beer Laos Dark (very strong 6.5% vol. it looked like Guiness but was carbonated like lager). Jay found his drinks refreshing in this hot climate. Helen had a 'Sexy b****' cocktail (Vodka, Kahula and pineapple juice), she enjoyed this alot. The cocktail was very different, it was like cold fruity coffee. The guy who served us made conversation with us in broken English. He was very friendly, his name was Sai.
