Kerry and I are now in Quito, Ecuador. Since our last blog we spent a day in the German History museum in Berlin which was excellent if not a little bit too much to take in. Everything from 1900 onwards was of most interest to us, it certainly seems that if there is ever a war, Germany has been in it, and probably started it. haha
The next day we did a tour of a Nazi Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. This was most interesting yet disturbing for us. I gather that in excess of 5000 people had been victims of Genocide there over the period of a few years during the Nazi era. We saw the special building they built called "Building Z" designed especially for the shooting or gasing and cremation of the many Jews, Gays, Politicians and Soviet POWs that were murdered there. After returning to our hostel we partook in more Beer and hot dogs which seems to be the thing to do in Germany.
Yesterday we rose at 4am to catch our 7:40 flight from Berlin to Quito. We had a 1.5 hour stopover in Madrid. The flight was pretty chaotic, i don't know if i would be in a hurry to fly with Iberia again. To add some salt to the wound, we were just about to land at Quito (landing gear down and probably a few hundred feet of the deck) when the engines were applied to full power and we were climbing out again. After a few orbits of the airport, we flew on for a further 30 mins to another airport and were told that the weather was not suitable for landing at Quito so we had to wait around in this other airport for a few hours to get a domestic transfer flight back to Quito when the weather was more suitable. We arrived tired and grumpy but are very glad to be in South America, our tour officially starts tonight and we hit the road tomorrow.
