We were picked up at 7.30 and at least this time the driver hadn't overslept. We had a lond day ahead of us, 12 hours in a mini bus. The journey passed by without a hitch and we arrived a little later than planned in a place called Probolinggo. We transferred on to a smaller mini bus (that was falling apart) and made the slow ascent to our hotel near Mount Bromo. We had been told by now that we had been given an upgrade on our hotel and would now be staying at Cafe lava. Maybe this was a result of my complaining on our previous trip I'm not sure! The trip up to the hotel took another 1.5 hours and I was quite glad that it was dark and I couldn't see the cliffs we were driving along. We arrived at our hotel to be told that we had been given a superior room... Wow it was amazing! Not that we would have much time there, we arrived at about 9pm ate dinner and went to bed as we had to be up by 3.30am. We had just enough time to purchase a wooly hat as the temperature was considerable lower that what we were use to... It was freezing!
We awoke at 3.30 put on as many layers as we could and headed out to find our jeep and driver! Trust us to get the crazy indoniseian driver again.
We made a very speedy and bumpy journey to the fist viewing point to watch the sunrise over Mount Bromo. This time we weren't disappointed, apart from the amount of people it was a breath taking view and something I will never forget.
After the sunrise we made our way back to the jeep for the next part of our adventure... Climbing Mount Bromo! The journey however had me holding on to Ed as we made the desent from the first viewing point. We arrived at the base of the volcano and told we had 1 hour to climb the volcan, take a couple of pictures and then get back to the jeep. We looked at the distance to the bottom of the volcano and could see it would at least take 30 minutes to get to that point. So we decided to rent a horse and ride to the very base of the volcano. Ha ha yes Ed on a horse I never thought I would see the day! As I had previous riding experience they left me to walk on my own, where as Ed had someone leading him so he could take pictures and videos. We arrived at the bottom of the 250 stairs that lead up to the summit. Ed and I started the climb, the dust had covered some of the stairs and it was tough getting to the top. We made it! It was great a truly wonderful sight. We sat at the top and took in the view and our achievement. We made our way back down the stairs and decided to walk back to the jeep rather than take the horses. It was a dusty track back down, we had to take our wooly hats off and cover our mouths as it would make you cough. It went up your nose and in your eyes, I was glad to get back to the jeep.
We arrived back at the hotel at 8.30, grabbed some breakfast and headed straight for the shower. We finally had time to enjoy the view from our room.... It was breath taking!
After an hour we were on the bus again heading east across java to the ferry point to Bali. It took us 7 hours to get there, another hour on the ferry and we had arrived in Bali!!
I have made a very short video of our journey to the volcano, it's just a bit of fun that has kept me entertained whilst sunbathing!
