Well we arrived into Byron Bay yesterday after Surf Camp and as soon as I got off the bus I knew I would love it. It's quite a small beachy town and is where all the hippies came and they never left. It has got such a relaxing atmosphere and everyone seemed to be really friendly. I really enjoyed Sydney, but I'm definitely not a big city girl and have fallen in love with the small towns. The beach is just stunning in Byron.
I stayed at a hostel called the Holiday Village with a couple from the Oz bus called Paul and Jo, who are great. My first night was in an 8 bed dorm, but then I moved into the apartments with Paul and Jo. These were brilliant as they have a double room and then a seperate room that has 2 bunk beds, which is where I stayed. You also get your own kitchen, bathroom and living area, which is so good after having to share these with everyone in previous hostels.
For our first night our driver, Uncle Buck, had reserved a table for all of us at a bar called Cheeky Monkeys, that was right across the road from our hostel. We had our meal together and spent the night drinking and talking. After everyone in the bar has finished their dinner the tables are then turned into the dance floor. This is when things get a bit hectic in there, as most people are quite drunk by this point and they have a few accidents. I wasn't one of them though! Silly me thought it would be a good idea to jump across to the next table to dance with Stine, I only just reached it and managed to hit my shin on the table! I still have the bruise now. It was quite funny at the time. Most people from the bus went home at about 1am, but Stine, Cecil and I were having a great time and stayed until closing. I had such a brilliant night but the next day was not good. It was ok though as we spent the day at the beach, so I slept quite a lot.
I stayed in Byron for four nights and loved every minute of it. All the days were spent at the beach and nights at Cheeky Monkeys. On Sunday though Stine, Cecil and I went on a day trip to a place called Nimbin. This is a very popular tourist destination because the locals are allowed to smoke anything and everything they want, you have to see it to believe it. Our Oz guide recommended it and said we would have a really funny day.
Our first stop was to a big market and it had a lot of different stalls, but most of them were hippy stalls like Tarrot reading and jewellery. There were also two men playing music, so as it was so hot the three of us sat under a big tree and just enjoyed the music. It was so relaxing. It was then time to drive onto Nimbin. Now this place is very strange. It's a town where time feels like it stands still and you are in a different world. I didn't believe that there would be such a place where people can openly smoke drugs and the police just turn a blind eye, but when we got there it was true! We went into the Nimbin museum, well you can't really call it that, as it was just full of so many weird paintings, that were probably done by people when they were high! We walked out to the back garden and there were people just smoking naughty things everywhere, it was such a shock to see that they do it so openly!
We stayed here for about an hour and just walked around the town and browsed in some shops. The town is great and every shop is different bright colour, with names such as 'Bring a bong, and Magical Herbs'. It was a very surreal and very funny day. I was just in shock that they are allowed to do it and the police let them! Apparently it is because they have been doing it for so many years and the police just can't do anything to stop it. Very, very strange, but a great day out with the girls.
The next day I spent at the beach with Jo, Paul, Cecil and Stine and then had an early night. Tomorrow it's time to leave and head to Surfers Paradise. I'm looking forward to it, but will be very sad to leave Byron.
