We are at the end of our second week and we had a fantastic tour of Johannesburg on Satrurday. Jane (Jack's cousin) has been so generous and hospitable in taking us around to see the downtown area which is crowded and busy; cars everywhere and nobody minding any rules very much. It was also spot the whitey, as there were mostly black people with stalls on the street and buildings which had been deserted and then taken over by squatters. They are trying to clean it up now but it does have a feeling of having been run down and neglected, and we didn't feel like getting out of the car to walk around . Then we went on to see the opposite area where the big mansions are with huge block,s, gorgeous gardens and avenues of trees; the houses all with big high fences and laser beams, razor wire, or electrified. We saw Nelson Mandela's house there which was rather modest compared to some. There is also a shift now with big places being knocked down and groups of 4 or 6 majestic fabulous villa units being built, - the developers are everywhere.
Then we went to the opposite again where we went to Soweto to see where the small little houses were built in the 1940's for the black people. We did not feel threatened there at all. There are two huge old power station towers there which are iconic landmarks and are painted wild colours. We also went to see Nelson Mandela's original house that he first owned and where he and Willie Mandela had their family, and where she was when he was imprisoned for 27 years. It is now a big tourist spot with a tour guide to take you through the house which was taken back to how it had been originally. There was a little café and beer garden just down the street which was buzzing, and big flashy cars riding by with music pumping out and all the young people there enjoying a beer and the atmosphere. Some gorgeous girls were washing cars for charity just outside this beer garden, they were getting a lot of attention. We returned back to Jane's and had a quiet night. Watched an amazing sunset, all golden light and the sun a red ball, we were relaxing with a glass of wine, and as the say here, "another s***ty day in Sth Africa".
Next day we went to an airfield which has historic aircraft. Jack had been taken to this airport earlier in the week. (lots of Tigers, Chinese training aircraft, a Catalina almost restored DC3, DC4. DC6 ,747, Cubs, Zlins, Yaks etc. We watched aircraft take off and land and had luncheon there with many of Jane's friends and we also arranged to meet Owen Burton and Joyce, his aunt who lives here.So it was quite a jolly crowd. The weather was perfect, and it was lovely having a pizza and beer there. It was interesting hearing the attitudes of the people here to how South Africa works.
Tonight we are off to have 'All you can eat; Peking Duck " with some staff members, Gavin, Alex, and more. Should be fun.Hope my tummy can handle it.
We had the First Lady of Kenya here to visit the Academy today, so there were tours and photos and speeches. Lots of fan fare. There seem to be many interesting people who visit.
