Arrived at the square wrapped up in our winter woolies in time to catch the 4am bus, the only one of the day, to Quilotoa. Arriving shortly after 5am and in the dark we guessed at which hill looked like it might have a crater lake lurking behind it and headed off in that direction. Wrong guess, confirmed by a quick chat with the only other person up in the town, and we trudged off in the other direction. Reached the edge of the crater, with the spectacular view of Laguna Quilotoa, just as it was getting light. Sat on the edge for quite a while taking in the view. Joined by an American girl who said her lodgings were pretty good and that she was going back for breakfast - the thought of a hot drink and a bed to catch up on lost sleep was enough for us to follow. Nice place ran by a local family, all kitted out in traditional dress. After breakfast went for a sleep under about 6 heavy blankets - it's rather cold at this altitude! Headed out around lunchtime to walk down the crater to the lake's edge. We hadn't got far when Rob's migraine reared it's ugly head again (started on the bus earlier, but thought had slept it off). This time it was the full deal and we were stuck on the side of the crater for a very horrible 2 hours of violent illness. A short lull in 'proceedings' offered a chance for Amy to drag me back up the steep and sandy path to the relative comfort of our hostel, where I remained in bed until the next morning. Amy chatted to and dined with an Aussie couple and the American, while I made do with a tray of rice and soup for company. The hostel lady lit our wood burning chiminea in our room, ensuring we were absolutely boiling as we attempted to go to sleep.
