Before jumping on the bus to Daegu, I spent a bit of the morning enjoying a coffee with Soli and Verena. Then we did the goodbyes as I grabbed my bag and jumped on the bus to the bus stop (learnt form the walk to the hostel that I can’t bring myself to walk all that way). The bus to Daegu only took a few hours and was painless. From the bus station it was relatively easy to navigate the train a couple of stops down to the main station; Daegu. Outside the station there was a tourist information centre which was useful to grab a local area and realised that I was very close to my hostel. I walked the few blocks to The Style Guesthouse and had to sit around for ages to check-in. There was nowhere to store my luggage so I could go and come back and despite the reception being in a café, there wasn’t even any staff in the café to ask if I could leave my bag somewhere. So I had to sit around for over an hour before anyone came. To make it worse, due to my slight stupidity, I couldn’t get the wifi to work, probably because I wasn’t putting in the right password even though it was pretty obvious when I asked a guest.
Eventually check in time rolled around and I went and dumped my bags and planned what to do with my 2 nights in Daegu, I got ‘talking’ to a Korean girl on the bed opposite. I say talking; I mean we had a google translator conversation, which was hilarious. We had a right laugh trying to talk through google and hand gestures. After about an hour giggling at each other’s attempt to translate but also, bizarrely, having a good chat and getting to know each other, I got ready to go and have a look around town. I had a wander around the town centre, which is just like any town centre with plenty of shops, a bit pointless since I wasn’t able to go shopping. But getting hungry I stumbled on a Mexican place and grabbed a burrito before getting a message from the Korean girl seeing if I wanted to hang out for the evening. I headed back to the hostel for an evening of playing jenga and pop up pirate with a couple of Korean people which turned into a funny drinking game, downing shots of the Korean rice wine; soju, as we relied both on google translator and a staff member who could translate for us.
For my only full day in Daegu, it was pouring with rain and adopted an Australian woman over breakfast who invited herself to join me for the day, can’t complain she was able to organise a job for me in Australia with her brother’s company, which I actually turned down. But anyway, we went for a stroll around some random herbal medicine market that was on not far away from the hostel where I had my blood pressure tested, and for the first time ever it came back as a normal reading! Not working has really paid off on and brought my blood pressure down to a normal level! We couldn’t resist jumping in to a little dumpling house to hide from the rain and the dumplings were amazing. I’m a big sucker for dumplings, yum yum. With the rain not easing up, we went for a coffee where I got to try a blueberry latter; I must find out how to make them for myself. The rest of the grim afternoon was rummaging through the vintage shops, of which there are many, I did manage to get a nice Italian silk scarf for around 90p! And I also found a new pair of D&G shoes for £100, but couldn’t quite justify the price, sadly. Splitting off from the Aussie woman I went and munched down a pizza and tidied my CV at the hostel for jumping in bed to watch a film. Not much else to do here and I’m ready to move on.
