It was so good to see Natalie, and to be back visiting her in Singapore. Needless to say the first evening was spent catching up and grabbing some food. I did very little with my first day in Singas whilst Nat was at work. It mainly consisted of sitting around, then sitting around the pool with a bit of a swim. But that evening I met her and her work mates for a few beers before we took a break from the bar to go to a comedy night in the same format as Who’s Line is it Anyway? Actually brilliant and such a good laugh, before heading back to the party and getting reasonably drunk.
The humidity here is definitely more intense than in Taiwan, but feeling a bit hungover, Natalie and I went out to explore and grab a coffee and a few little boutique shops before deciding we weren’t up for ambling around. So instead we got a burger king and went for a chill out in the pool. But that evening we were back on the booze at a house party. Wow the apartments here are too nice! The three of us hanging the next morning (Hollie, Nat’s housemate) we thought a good walk would sweat the alcohol out of us. As we left, we randomly found Hollie’s shoe on the street…what the hell?! We have no idea but it was hilarious. The 11km walk around MacRitchie reservoir helped us with our hangovers and was a really pleasant walk but we topped the day off with a chilled night in front of a film.
I had a few more days left in Singapore, so I spent that with a bit of time dedicated to the pool each day and visiting the Haw Par Villa. Well that was unusual, it is a park built by the Tiger balm brother and contains over 1,000 statutes depicting various scenes such as Chinese mythology, folklore, legends, history, and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism. Random!! There is a weird tunnel where you walk through the Ten Courts of Hell, which features gruesome depictions of Hell, so worth a visit. I also made time to shop and visit the island of Sentosa, which has a range of attractions on it. But I went for a walk around and along the beaches and visited the ‘The Southernmost Point of Continental Asia’. After work, Natalie took me for food at a hawker site, Lau Pa Sat, a walk around Marina Bay and the waterfront promenade.
I made some time to visit Patrick and his girlfriend, Jade who had moved to Singapore even though I had just seen them in Taiwan. I went over to theirs for a game of squash, not easy in humidity and a nice home cooked meal courtesy of Patrick. As well as squeezing in a lunchtime catch up with Paddy along the waterfront promenade where I learnt there were otters in the water.
For my final day, I visited the Botanic Gardens and met Natalie later for a walk around the Gardens by the Bay before my flight to Australia. It was here I suddenly realised that I had missed my flight! Such a muppet, as it was a 1.30am flight, I knew I had to be at the airport at 11pm but I had somehow forgotten to realise it would be the day before. Oops! So that evening was spent rebooking a flight to Sydney this time I splashed out a bit more to fly BA rather than Scoot. So on my final final day, I lazed about and grabbed lunch with Natalie and visited the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, just because it sounded odd, before heading to the airport to catch the plane at the right time and on the right day.
