We arrived in Bangkok and spent one night there recovering from our flight and accustomed long stopover in Singapore airport. We knew we were coming back here so could have a proper look around later on. We did have time for a good meal out in Chinatown though that evening. It was like nothing we'd come across before. A long street with massive neon signs sprouting out from buildings and street restaurants spilling out onto the pavement from all directions. The sights and smells were amazing! Was incredible just walking around and watching the different stalls cooking this, that and the other. It immediately made us like Bangkok :).
Anyway the next day we got a train to Phitsanulok which is the jumping off point for seeing some ancient ruins in Sukhothai. This was the first train we'd got since India and it was quite a different experience. The first thing we noticed was that whenever a train arrived at the station the outside of it got cleaned by an army of people scrubbing, rinsing and then mopping. Once inside it got even better. We had airline style seats in a clean, comfortable, air conditioned carriage. An hour in we even got treated to noodle soup, green chicken curry with rice and a doughnut to finish! Now this was travelling :). Phitsanulok itself was not much to write home about really, the best thing about it was probably the night market which was a revelation to us. They had many many stalls selling different clothes, shoes and jewellery but most importantly an area to get some food. That night Hannah ordered a Thai green curry and it proved to be a bit too spicy for her. As a caring boyfriend I decided it would be funny to film her pain as it was so hilarious (see video!).
The next day we went to the ruins at Sukhothai about an hour away. We actually got there about 12pm by which point it was baking in the sun. We hired a tuk tuk to take us around as he was the only guy that seemed to speak any kind of English in the vicinity of where we got dropped off. The ruins themselves were fairly interesting, dating from around the 13th century and set in very nice surroundings. I struggled to enjoy them that much as I was just so hot. Hannah seemed to fair much better than me so I left her in charge of the photographs and sought shelter under any shade I could find.
