Han & Dan
So..... we get up at some ungodly hour of 5am to catch the bus up to Alice. So we wait, and we wait and the bloody bus never turns up! GREAT- luckily the office was open and we just got a taxi to the office and the bus met us there where we didn't actually leave until 7am- which means we could have stayed in bed for another few hours!!! Not a good start!
After catching up on some sleep on the bus we had to do the obligatory welcome speech where you have to introduce yourself and answer awkward questions- I tell you what if we ever split up Cilla would have 2 great contestants for blind date!! We were then warned that we had to travel over 4000km form Adelaide to Alice Springs- more shut eye needed!!
After a long day of travelling we arrived at a town called Parachilna with a population of 5!! Crikey- in for a good night then!!
We had some dinner- not your usual but what can you expect from a town with only 5 people living there. We tucked into a selection of emu, kangaroo and camel before watching the highlight of the evening- a 2.8km coal train carrying enough coal to power 1/3rd of South Australia. We also got to put coins on the track and they got stretched by the train when it went past- cool souviner!
So- early to bed (more coz there was nothing to do) as we have to be up early to travel north again. Today we did a hike and visited some cool salt lakes, and travelled through a whole load of nothing- talk about deserted!
More travelling (ok its a bloody long way) and we get to the town of Coober Pedy! This town has a few more people but they are weirder- they live underground!!! This town is an opal mining town and because it is in the middle of the dessert it gets to temperatures of about 50C in summer so they all live underground coz it is cooler. In the evening we drank in an underground bar and slept in an underground dorm- very cool (literally)!!!
They also filmed Pitch black here (mmmm Vin Diesel) so there were weird space ships all over town- guess you gotta get your entertainment somewhere!!
Up early again but today we head to Uluru so its worth it!!
Finally we arrive in Central Australia and take a walk around Kata Tjuta which are also know as the Olgas. Basically rounded rocks that look out of this world- they were really wicked and set us up for Uluru.
Heading back from our walk we enjoyed a champagne sunset at Uluru which was amazing before having a BBQ for dinner and then sleeping under the stars at Uluru base camp!! We got to sleep in swags which are basically canvas sleeping bags with a mattress in the bottom- surprisingly comfortable but still the thought of snakes and spiders crawling over you in the night wasn't too appealing!! One of the most memorable experiances of our trip tho.
Up early again for an Uluru sunrise, which was wicked and then we headed off to walk the base which was a whopping 9.4km!!
Uluru- one cool rock and 2/3rds of it is underground!!!
We then headed to Kings Canyon which was wicked too- we got to walk above the canyon before heading to Alice.
So we are now finally in Alice Springs, it is between 40 & 45C with about 80% humidity- its so hot if feels like your skin is melting!! Here for a week coz there is only one bus a week so not sure what the plan is but tonight we are going to a reptile show and might be brave enough to hold a snake.... aaaarrrrrrr
Adios xxxx
