Han & Dan
Queenstown:
Our skiing mission begins!!!!! Yes we chose to battle with the slops of Queenstown, the capital of skiing in New Zealand. So we arrived here, went to town & sorted out our tickets & rental clothes (you will see in the photos very soon how good we looked...... yeah, right!!!!) for the next day on the slops.
It was an early..... very early morning rise to catch the bus to the top of the mountain. Suited & booted myself (the Virgin ski boy) & Hannah (the not so virgin ski girl) took off to 'Coronet Peak'. We arrived & joined up with our new buddies in the 'Timmy' class, yes we were booked on a beginners course for the day. Basically, we can now ski.......... just a little though. The day was really good actually, we had two sessions where the lady taught us the basics of skiing, how to stop & stuff like that. Then we were let loose to do what we wanted........ that may have been a mistake........
I didn't get a photo of it but I will try to explain......... As soon as we had finished our last class we decided to go to the top of the beginners slop & test out our new skills. To get to the top of the slop you have to get on the 'Magic Carpet' which is basically a conveyor belt which you have to get on & off with your ski's ON. Well, Hannah went first & she seemed to have conquered it..... until she began to wobble & then fell over backwards!!!!!! Meanwhile the conveyor belt continues while Hannah was flapping all over the place. I was in hysterics & couldn't move as I had my ski's on but one of the stewards finally came to Hannah's rescue & got her back on her feet. You may have had to be there, but it was well funny!!!!!!
Anyway, Queenstown is a pretty cool place to go. Quite a small town with a real friendly atmosphere. While we were here we also went up the gondola & just before we left we went ice skating. Now because I am writing this postcard I will not tell you what happened on the ice rink, but I'm sure Hannah will get her own back very soon..........
Wanaka:
So after a few days of Queenstown we moved on to the beautifully situated Wanaka. Wanaka is a very small town around 120km north of Queenstown. It is based on the edge of 'Lake Wanaka' & is very close to the skiing field of 'Treble Cone'. We got to Wanaka in the mood for some more skiing (as we were professionals now!!!!!). Again we rented some skiing clothes & brought some ski passes & the next day we went up the mountain. But this time we were on our own...... no classes for us today.
We practised a few runs on the very small beginners slop & then both headed up the very top of the mountain on the ski lift. Man, we were both not prepared for what came next!!!!! The steepness was just too much!!! We battled through though & after a few falls & a good half an hour we made it to the bottom. We had a really good day on the mountain but we also came off it with a few nice bruises.
After our tough day on the slops we got back to our little camper & decided it was time for a bit of junk food!!!! So we ordered pizza & drank copious amounts of cheep wine. If you asked Hannah how much she drunk she wouldn't have a clue!!!!!
Well, next up is a trip to 'Glaciers Country', Frans Josef...........
