Han & Dan
From Dunedin we headed south to Invercargill but only for a one night stopover. We did drive to Bluff which is the most southern town in New Zealand. From here it was the turning point (literally) as we started to make our way north and I suppose our way home!
From here we went to Milford Sound which is a huge valley which was carved out by a glacier traveling from the land out to the sea for about 10km. Again the drive up was amazing and we returned to the snowy area which was pretty. We arrived at a holiday park but they had no powered sites as they run on a generator so we had to check into a dorm for the night but it was gorgeous to sleep in a bed for a night.
The next day we went on a boat cruise in the Sound (where the glacier had been) which was amazing as there were really steep cliff faces on each side and some spectacular waterfalls. Milford Sound is possibly the wettest place in Nz as they get 6 meters of rain each year but we were lucky to get a perfectly clear day. When the boat was sailing back to the wharf we spotted a pod of 20 or more dolphins which was incredible. There were even baby ones which leapt completely out of the water and some of the adult ones swam at the bow of the boat most of the way back which was such an unbelievable experience as were were at the front only 2 feet away. Defiantly something we will never forget.
On the way to & from Milford Sound you have to go through this tunnel called the Homer tunnel which took 20 years to build and was filled with icicles and had no lighting. It was bloody scary and your not supposed to stop 5 km either side of it due to avalanche risk!! Aaaarrrrr which they told us that before we stopped every 10 mins to take photo's!
After Milford we stayed at Te Anau which is the second biggest lake in New Zealand. We just recharged for a few days and got up again at 2.30am for the footie but we got knocked out so it was a tad disappointing especially seeing that we had got up so bloody early and also coz we got back to the van at 6am and Dan's up again at 7.30am for some other match!!! Bloody football!
