Frans Josef:
We have entered 'Glacier Country'. A few hundred kilometres north of Wanaka we encountered two huge glaciers, Frans Josef glacier & Fox Glacier (no, not the mint!!!!). We decided to visit Frans Josef Glacier as it was said to be the more spectacular of the two & was also a lot larger.
It had been raining the whole day before we got here & on the morning of the trip, yes you guessed it, it was still raining. Apparently it rains for 265 days of the year here. So we got to base camp & changed into as many clothes as we could fit on as well as all the waterproof stuff. Then we began our 8 hour trip. It took about 45 mins to walk to the foot of the glacier & there we were told, & we could see for ourselves, that a large (80 tonnes) piece of the ice had fallen off LAST NIGHT & they were expecting another LARGE part to fall off in the next 24 hours.......... so of course...... we carried on. We then spent the day climbing through the glacier & I have to say that it was pretty amazing, as well as being a bit scary in places. I won't say anymore apart from you will just have to look at the photos as soon as we find a computer that will let us download them.
Greymouth:
250km's up the road from the glaciers we came to the town of Greymouth. There wasn't really a lot to do here as it was more of a place to stay for the night before we carried on to our next place. But we did visit some 'Pancake Rocks', yes, they are exactly what they say they are. Also there were some blow holes there, but sadly the tide was out at the time........ so the holes weren't blowing at the time.
So, we were planning to leave in the morning to go east back to Kiakoura to hopefully see the whales this time round......... but our power cable we used on the campervan had....... melted. So I called the campervan company & explained it to them & they said that they would have to send a courier with a new one tomorrow. So, we wouldn't be leaving in the morning. Then when the new cable came Hannah realised that she had left her coat in Frans Josef so we had that couriered to us the following day!!!!! So after wanting to spend one night in Greymouth, we ended up spending three. Never mind, lets just hope the whale watching doesn't get cancelled again when we get to Kiakoura......... fingers crossed!!!!!
Well, until next time my good friends.........
