It's day 7 and the final push to complete both the John O'Groats to Lands End section and the U.K. Tour. It's a big day 370 miles approx. Fortunately the forecast is good and the Kevlar jeans are out rather than the waterproof trousers.
No breakfast on offer at the Reservoir View Motel ( never did get to see where the view was from ) so we set off on the A38 at 7:45 to try and get past Bridgwater before the traffic gets heavy. Mission accomplished but it's still slow going up to Minehead. Overtaking chances are few and far between with almost permanent double whites so overtakes must be taken with vigour!
A quick left off of the A39 through Porlock up the tight twisty hill and we're on Exmoor. We have a completely unimpeded run which is a great way to work up an appetite. The views are great and the road is dry and clear. With rumbling stomachs we arrive at Lynmouth for a slap up breakfast at the Tea Rooms.
Fully fed and watered its back on the road heading towards Barnstaple. We could have headed for Ilfracombe & Woolacombe to take in the coastline but it's a detour we can't afford today. The ride to Barnstaple has got plenty of variety and not too many cars. We're switching the lead position a bit more frequently today which is working well. The town is bypassed and were off to Bideford back on the A39. It's quick but not very interesting other than the view of Bideford from the Torridge Bridge (would have looked even better if the tide was in). Bude next and we're in good overtaking moods as we do this stretch right up until we get to a really long queue at Stratton. We don't know what's happening but cars in front are doing U-Turns so using a bit of local knowledge we divert towards Launceston and the A303 with a view to picking the A39 up again further down the coast.
Launceston is quiet and were plotting a course to Bodmin Moor. There's long term road works and a long stretch of 40mph restrictions. We probably lose 5-10 mins here but actually it's a good little bit of respite and a chance to stretch the arms and legs a bit. Time is getting on so we decide to make the push for Lands End. There's a fuel, coffee and Danish stop at Hayle which takes longer than expected as we're both a bit tired and in the end it's 14:30 before Lands End comes into view. The weather isn't so good this far west and the temperature is about 7 degrees lower than earlier. After a few obligatory, photos and a facebook post its time to turn around and retrace the route. The intention was to cut right across Dartmoor to pick up the A38 but it's a Friday, traffic is expected to be busy due to the Bank Holiday week and we're both a bit nakred. We do get to skirt Dartmoor a little past Okehampton but perhaps that's a bit we can come back and do at a later date.
The final 3 hours are spent getting back to Curry Rivel with the anticipation of several cold bottles of Peroni and a Chinese takeout. It's still nice weather and getting warmer as we head out of Devon. We have a pretty good run back with little in the way of delays in glorious sunshine. With less than 10 miles to go there is a road closure at the A378. Luckily, I know a quick detour down a few single track roads rather than taking the really long diversion. A local deer makes an appearance across the road in front of me but its far enough away not to cause concern. On the home straight now and there's the chance for a final couple of overtakes before being greeted by a Welcome Home banner at our destination. 377 miles today making it one of the longest.
What a week - 2250 miles in 7 days!! It'll take a few days to recuperate but by then the memories will start to get replayed (along with the GoPro footage) and we'll be itching to do it again. Just need to work on suggestions for possible destinations.
