Day 6 is an early start to try and avoid the Sheffield rush hour. It's already quite warm and the sun is shining when we depart. There are fewer layers of clothing, no need for heated vests or heated grips but every need for sport mode on the bike settings!
We head towards the Peak District and Snake Pass. There are the inevitable annoyances but for the main part it's a good little stint and the sport mode is paying dividends even if the fuel consumption is high :-). We drop out of the park towards Glossop and take the call to hit the motorways to North Wales in preference for dealing with the Manchester suburbs.
North Wales comes up soon enough and we're headed for Snowdonia. We don't have enough time in the Itinerary to do all of the good stuff but start with some food at the Ponderosa cafe and a quick blast down Horseshoe Pass. It's good but could have done with a few more legs on that one legged horse.
From this point on we have a few SatNav challenges with 2 Garmins disagreeing on the correct route even though they've both been programmed with the same route and rider profiles. I blame the BMW one just because. The next few hours are spent on B roads cutting through mid Wales on the way to Builth Wells. These roads are often narrow, sometimes gravelly but such a lot of fun. We take it in turns leading and it's good to swap around to observe as well as to mix up the GoPro footage. We pass along the lake at Bala and it's a bit reminiscent of Loch Ness on a smaller scale.
Builth Wells looms up and we're off to the Brecon Beacons. Now we've both done the Beacons before but for some reason we let the SatNav guide the way. Unfortunately it decides to takes us down the A470 which is possibly the least interesting route you can take. Razor does his best to liven things up by annoying a Lotus Elise driver who doesn't appreciate being over taken - this is summed up nicely by Razor " well he shouldn't be driving with his head up his arse"
Fatigue starts to set in a bit as the afternoon draws on. We're still having fun; overtaking, filtering and giving it some beans but perhaps in a slightly more sedate way. The A449 is a chance to stick on the cruise control before getting to the M4 for the bridge crossing. Whilst the SatNavs may claim to be traffic condition aware, I decide to take an executive decision and completely disregard all guidance in preference of my "local" knowledge. It mostly worked out apart for some unforeseen road works and a nasty little 3 vehicle accident that held up progress slightly. Time for a quick splash and dash for fuel at Cheddar and we're at the Reservoir View Motel in Axbridge. On arrival it appears that our hosts are nowhere to be found either in person or by phone. 30 mins goes by and still nothing. Patience is running thin when we finally get through to an annoying American help desk at Booking.com. Just at that moment we also get a message from our hosts regarding an emergency admission to hospital with instructions on how to find the clues which have been left for us to get into our rooms - it's like an episode of The Adventure Game - Grunder Grunder!
Shower and change and off to the village centre. Start with The Oak house but it's s but fancy. Razor is drawn to the Chalice Morris Dancers from Somersetshire who are performing outside of the Lamb Inn so we head there for food. It's a really good feed and good beer and heartily recommended.
In summary it was a long hot but enjoyable day. 310 miles covered with nearly 8hrs in the saddle. One more day to go and it's a biggun!
