Meikles Adventure
Well the grump is born. Goodness whether I went to bed too late or what – waking up and having to get the trailer sorted and out of Adelaide – urrrgggghhhh!...
Adelaide to Port Augusta – and I didn't care if I was going to the moon by the time we left the camp site at about 10am. A little way out of Adelaide Sach remembered we should have taken the other highway to the Barossa Valley – by then too late – I tried to programme the GPS to take the next turn off and even that wasn’t going to work for me – missed it and missed the wine area entirely. Very disappointing but the day was just one of those kind of days from start to finish really. We took a tiny little detour at the top nearish Port Augusta and it looked like all of the rest of the countryside we’d seen that day from the side of the main highway – A1(?) – until we got a little ways out of Port Augusta and came across the mountains and looking out over this huge gas(?) mine on the water – port bay. Really interesting scenery – the bottom end of Flinders Ranges – would have been nice to have some more of the Flinders Ranges as it forms some of the oldest geologically formatted parts of Australia – definitely just don’t have enough time to see everything in 6 months – so we just gonna try do the best we can and get the most out of what we do see!...
Went to the Big 4 Caravan Park – looked a bit like a detention centre – so tried the Shoreline Caravan Park – not much diference but now well past our 3pm stop time – time to stop and set up for another night. $30 per night to stay here – wow – dust bowl of red sand and no trees, but hundreds of caravans and more arriving every minute. They say Port Augusta is a huge middle point and a lot of people come through (to Adelaide/to Darwin/to Perth). Still very grumpy after set up we took ourselves into town to have a drink – found the old pub we’d seen on the way in, had a few drinks (1 all over Tenille), some dinner (meal came and a couple home made salads on a trolley with lots of bottles of sauces and mustards to pick, really simple but the meal was quiet nice – ladies in the bar were just great with the kids - and back to the site where more caravans were arriving and setting up. Still in a bad mood though and I’m starting to rub off on Sach I think – time for bed, tomorrow is another day…
