Meikles Adventure
Can you believe it – Grand Final Day again – possibly Groundhog Day – nope we're never in the same place to achieve that right now!
Gone to sleep in the car in our seats at about 3:00am or so, somewhere on the highway about 40km out of Burketown, Carpentaria Gulf, now in Queensland.
Woke up probably about 4:30/5:00 to see Sach get out of the car and not return. Jaz awoke and when I went to look for him he was asleep on top of all the tables & pegs & some hard pokey things, on top of the folded and tied down trailer.
Savannah Way – Carpentaria Highway –despite being up we only left our roadside spot at about 8am. Into Burketown, and not quite what we expected I don’t think. Poor Sach, after the day and night driving he’s had yesterday, he even talked about driving on to Normanton – but we’re in the middle of nowhere – The Northern Gulf, QLD. Too tired though, so we took a drive out to the gulf and then back in to check into the only place to stay that was open yet – the caravan park. Trying to park the trailer and decided to rather rent a container for the night - $80 with airconditioning – sounds better than erecting the trailer for sure at the minute!
Sach collapsed & I did washing and general clean up after a dustbowl had now deposited in every nook & cranny of the car & trailer – the worst part of trips along out-of-the-way roads.
We went into the pub in town at about 2pm. A few people about so a bit of a vibe – we relegated to a back corner of the place due to kids but there was another family with their kids & the place was a good spot to be on a Saturday afternoon.
Collingwood won the Grand Final – yippee!! Go Collingwood Forever!!!! Sach thrilled – haven’t seen him on his phone at all other than the last 2 Saturdays. Burketown has been a good place to stop though. We didn’t see the wonder that rolls into town between Oct & Nov – a big roll cloud – 400km long it can be & people come up here in planes & hanggliders to ride it like a huge sky wave.
Once the footie was finished we went to a rodeo in town for the weekend. Interesting place to be – very disorganised group though and not much on – only bucking broncos tonight & very slow coming out – but it was at least an event & we don’t come by many when we don’t know what we’re going to be doing or where we’re going to be from one day to the next.
Came back about 8:00pm or so to find some friendly cockroaches floating around the container – urrrrgggggghhhhh – please don’t let them crawl over us tonight, not keen on that at all!
Jaz asleep on the short ride back and Tenille asleep after Sach had even passed out on the bed. Organised the car a bit and packed away clothes and whatever else I’ve removed in the day. Now my turn to turn the lights out…
