Meikles Adventure
Goodness – a few weeks have gone by
– the blog & my current keepings up of our day-to-day antics have gotten
very behind!
Another day of not too much
activity. We are staying at the
Springvale Homestead campground in Catherine. Said it had a pool & was not too dear. What a fantastic spot though – we spent
most of the morning checking out the animals here – girls think it is quite
fantastic! Seen ducks with their
ducklings, a turtle, there are guinea fowl, kangaroos everywhere, geckos in the
bathrooms and guess what else – crocodiles in the billabong (about 20 feet from
where we have set up our trailer).
We have been into Catherine to get a
new battery (the one in the car has actually been boiling over the last couple
of days on the road) & various other items we needed from a relatively
large sized town. Treated ourselves
to Macdonalds for lunch – airconditioning & a play area for the kids – very
few and far between & we have not seen one since Broome possibly. Quite weird to realise we are out of WA
now and almost in Darwin.
Jaz has not been feeling too great
and went for a long sleep in the heat when we got back to camp, Sach and
Tenille went for a swim in cane toad pool here & we did not get down to the
Catherine River for a swim or the hot springs for that matter as we were
hoping, Jaz only up again at about 5pm.
More wildlife to spot, baby cane
toads to catch, ducks to feed, and so it goes.
After we’d eaten our dinner a group
of people came walking along the billabong in front of our camp looking for
crocodiles so Sach, Tenille & Jaz went down to the waters edge to see if
they could catch sight of one – and guess what – just as they got there (to the
water’s edge – where Tenille & Jaz had been bending over checking out fish
and the like earlier) – up came a croc.
Jaz nearly had a fit at first – started crying and running up to camp
saying that it was coming to eat her, must have given her a bit of a fright, Sach
said it was amazing how quickly it had come out of the water.
Sach was absolutely fascinated,
telling me its quite large for a freshwater (10 foot or so) – just not what I
wanted to hear though. Tenille got
out her chair and the girls kept going back and forwards to go be near Sach who
just could not stop watching it wth the torch down by the water.
We have gone to bed – the girls
relatively late, and Sach and I relatively early but I have awoken a few times
in this heat and now just cannot get back to sleep. It is oppressively hot in the bedroom of the trailer and
although I’m a little petrified of a freshwater crocodile very, very close to
where I’m sitting & bugs crawling into my ears – at least I have some cold
water to drink and it feels not as unbearably hot as I did in bed!
Went to the toilet and there are
absolutely heaps of kangaroos/wallabies in this place. A couple of the ducks are sleeping near
our camp and have just waddled over to say hi (wagging tails – in the hope of
some bread I think) & gone off again.
It is dark, mind you and they made quite a noise coming up to near me,
thank goodness just ducks though!
Off to Catherine Gorge tomorrow though
so I better get back to bed – oh man I’m not too sure about all these gorge
walks though – lets hope the heat does not get too bad tomorrow(!?) – highly
doubtful at the moment – its hot, very hot!
