Meikles Adventure
Wow, a bit different for us to wake up in some different beds! I ended up sharing a single bed with Jaz and Sach had the double with Tenille, comfortable enough though so all good.
Up a little late for us though – going fwd an hour and a half has definitely messed our days up a bit (NT from WA).
Had a nice cooked breakfast for a bit of a change and hot the road again, heading into Gregory National Park, about 60km back from the Victoria River Roadhouse. We thought it would have great 4WD tracks – sounded very interesting. Turned out to be a bit disappointing though, where we were going to camp had been closed since June due to flood damage. Couldn't swim anywhere it had previously said you could (saltwater crocs here) and the 4WD were quite ******* the old tyres (lots of rocks), but very flat and uninteresting. So instead of setting up camp as we had thought originally, we went up to see the old Bullita Homestead and then headed towards Catherine.
A long hot drive with a dodgy airconditioner. Car just struggling with the heat and the heavy load so when we go anywhere over 80km/hr the thing stops working. I thought all would be sorted in Kununarra, but with the temp on the road most days being 40 degrees or so – well it just looks like another thing we might just have to wear.
Arrived near Katherine about 6:00pm and just got to Springvale Homestead to book in and set up before it got too dark. Not the most cleanly of facilities etc, but animals everywhere and quite a magic spot really. Bugs biting so sprayed all around and after we set up we went for a swim in the pool in the dark – this one only closes at 9pm. A bit slimy and a few cane toads about (1st I’ve seen I think – urggh), but nice to cool down after the day. Back for dinner and then Sach & the girls headed to bed while I stayed up far too long trying to finish my book – 2nd one down on this trip – good to get at least a little chance to read every so often.
