April has been a real travel month for me. Of course we have been every day at school also, but in every weekend I have gone somewhere. This weekend I went to Shanghai to see my old friends from Finland. One of my friends is studying in Shanghai so it was really nice to have a local guide. Also our common friend, who studies in Northern China, came to Shanghai with us. I totally fell in love with Shanghai at first sight! Clean, modern but huge city with a mix of all kinds of nationalities made a huge impression on me.
On Friday we went to see the People's Square and Park which were right next to our hotel, Phoenix. There was a tea festival, where we could taste all kinds of teas around China. In People's park there was also Modern Art Museum where we went. I really enjoyed it. In the top of it, they had a very lovely restaurant and café which I really recommend to visit if it is good weather. In the evening we ate well together with old friends and discussed about our feelings about living in China. After supper we went to a bar and restaurant street called Xintiandi. It was a really nice place, but the prices were same than in Finland. In the night we also visited in the Bund. I really liked it, but unfortunately there were a lot of construction sites in area and it was a bit difficult to walk there.
On Saturday we went to see the Pudong area. Weather was just perfect, blue sky, sun and 26 degrees. We went the by subway and after arriving just walked around the area. We visited Jin Mao tower and Shanghai World Financial Center (Picture). In Jin Mao building you can visit in 94th floor with 7 Euros. The other building would have been even higher, but the highest floors would have cost 16 Euros, so we skipped them. After this we went to see the Pearl Tower from outside and had a picnic in the Green Land of Pudong. European sparkling wine with sushi was just perfect. :) In the afternoon we left the Pudong and went back to other side of the river with sightseeing tunnel. It wasn't actually sightseeing tunnel like the advertisements told, it was a 4 minute tunnel full of neonlights under the water. Heh, not really what we expected but so Chinese that we just laughed for it. In the evening we had a reservation to Japanese restaurant. There our 4-person group had our own cook and he prepared the food right in front of us. It was very nice and food was just perfect! At night we made around in French Concession and visited about 4 different bars. I enjoyed about this a lot, because before I haven't found a place from China, where you can just sit with your friends and have a chat with a class of wine. Everywhere else the music is always too loud in bars, but not in Shangai.
On Sunday we had a totally different day. We went to see the F1 Grand Prix. It was raining the whole day, but we still had a great time. It was very nice experience something on live, what you have just watched from tv for years. After race we went to eat to French Concession (Papa John's has the best pizzas in China!!) and after dinner we went to Pudong's side of the city. There is a world's highest pub, Cloud 9. It is in the 87th floor of Hyatt hotel. The place was amazing! Very fancy restaurant and bar, and the best drinks I've ever tasted. This is something you shouldn't miss when visiting Shanghai!
On Monday we already had to leave to airport pretty early. I am totally in love with Shanghai, but if you want to say that you have lived in China, Guangzhou is a good place for it. Shanghai is like a modern European city, but absolutely worth of visiting.
