Hong Kong was everything I expected and more!! It has such an awesome mix of East and West!
Getting in from the airport was so easy and the first thing I noticed was just how modern everything around me was! It was about 5pm when I reached my hostel on Monday night. I'm staying on the east island so have to get the subway under the way (alternative is fast ferry which is not for me haha!). My hostel is basic but nice and my roommates were really cool. A girl named Jen who is British/Phillipino but lives in Shanghai and Jerome who is French but lives in Canada! So we are a global bunch! We went and had dinner together and then watched the light show on the Hong Kong foreshore which was amazing- it's like vivid but every day!!
Tuesday I planned to go out exploring with Jen but burnt myself pretty badly so stayed back to deal with that. We did go and have breakfast together though and Jerome came too. We had nice pastries at a French patisserie! After I showered and sourced some burn cream I headed across to central Hong Kong to explore. I found the high court, the war memorial, the DOJ building, the oldest cathedral and the Ferris Wheel we saw in the light show! I mostly walked around because I had the time but the double decker trams we're pretty cool looking! I spent the afternoon in the botanical gardens just hanging out as the sun went down. For dinner I just got some fruit. It's noticeably expensive here!
On Wednesday I went out and did some more exploring. I spent some time in the City Gallery which was a cool insight into all the plans to make Hong Kong even better and a lot more environmentall friendly! I love the architecture here - it's so funky! From the way roof of the convention centre to the half-missing legislative assesmbky building, some real statement pieces! For dinner I had pizza which was actually amazing - not New Star Auburn good but pretty good!!
Thursday it rained most the day so I went to the movies! I saw the film Dunkirk which was pretty average, Grandma said Jen loved it but I wasn't a fan! In the afternoon I went to the markets to go shopping and also see about getting my IPhone repaired since it suddenly conked out. I dropped off my iPhone to get repaired then spent some time browsing and people watching! There's such a mix of people here - it's hard to pick locals amongst the mainlanders and tourists! I couldn't get my phone fixed so instead headed to Apple and brought a new iPod touch. I've been meaning to upgrade mine since it can't be synced anymore and this way I can just hotspot to use Facebook etc until I get something permanently figured out! I found blueberry Somersby ciders so sat in the hostel lounge and had a drink with some of the American guys staying.
Friday and Saturday I spent in Macau. I've written about this separately!
Sunday I went and walked the Dragons Back trail walk. It was about 6km with some great views and it ended at a beach so I chilled there for a bit! It was about 34 degrees but it was good to get out and do something active! I was pretty knackered by the time I got back to my hostel about 7pm. I went and had pizza again for dinner since it was my last night!
Monday morning I got up and headed to the airport early. Next stop is South Korea!!
