Arrived late in Mumbai as a result of the previous engine trouble followed by a long run in under pilot control. The Captain says we have less than 2 meters under the keel. That being so, he can go as slow as he likes by my book! Haze over the city but moored at terminal next to Naval Dockyard so interesting crafts including aircraft carrier, sub, helicopter and destroyers.
Eventually managed to swap our tour tickets to go with John and Carol. Liked Mumbai-very busy and noisy but full of colour. The older part is all Colonial elegance and Victorian splendour. Some really lovely buildings including the University designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Apparently he was the architect and/or restorer of 26cathederals, 474 churches, 42 mansions, 26 schools etc. John was in his element at the magnificent Victoria Terminus built in Italian Gothic style. Very 'mighty Raj' We saw the lady only carriages and witnessed just how packed a train can be!
There were a lot of beggars particularly a very formulaic combination of mother with baby on hip and toddler in tow. They were everywhere run by bosses who take their'earnings ' I gave one family my packed lunch which at least they could eat. Also took photo of guy feeding 20 or30 feral cats.
Spent quite a bit of time at Mahatma Gandh's house which was really good. Some of his sayings are so memorable and timeless.
Enjoyed the Marine Drive and lovely sweep of beach. Also the Indian Gate and beautiful silver Victorias-horse-drawn carriages.
Lunch was at an extremely smart hotel by the beach and it was excellent with a great variety of dishes which were all excellent.
Shopping was most memorable for trying to cross the road but did manage to buy a sari in black and silver which is available with wearing instructions for themed evenings or fancy dress girls!
Back to the ship for Burn's Night with bagpipes, addressing of the Haggis, and the Celtic Grace. Excellent evening show.
PS Now out of pirate territory so can use promenade desk at night.
