As it was new years day in uyuni only a few of the tour offices were open and only one would give us a discount. We couldn't get online to research any of the companies so we decided to go with the cheapest. It turned out that it didn't matter because all the companies swap customers to get a full jeep so we're not sure which company we actually went with.
We signed up for the three day tour which would also take us into Chile at the end so we would still be heading in the right direction. In our jeep were two couples both from Bolivia who spoke no English and also a driver/guide who again spoke no English. It was a fun three days...
Our first stop was just outside of town to a train cemetery that was full of old rusting trains that you can clamber up and down and inside was pretty cool.
After this we drove straight to the salt flats, a long long time ago they used to be lakes that have now dried up and just left the salt. people take really cool photos, because you cant get perspective of close or far away, which we tried to do but I don't think they were successful. I will try and upload them when the WiFi gets better.
We then went to this island rising in the middle of the salt flats but it cost £3 and the lonely planet said there nothing there but view of the salt which was everywhere anyway so it seemed a bit pointless.
After this we drove to a salt hotel on the edge of the salt. The lovely Bolivian people gave us a single room claiming it was a 'matrimonial' and was smaller then a prison cell. It literally only had a bed. It sounded much more exciting then it was! Haha we had a communal dinner of soup and chicken the dinner is the same everyday in Bolivia.
The next day we woke early and drove across the desert. We drove for about 10 hours and had no idea really what was going on or what we were looking at. We stopped for lunch but some picunas (like small skinny llamas) and flamingos which was cool. We also saw a rock that looked upside down or that it would topple over any moment. I think it was created by the wind. Apart from that it was mostly lake and desert landscapes. I ended up napping in the car.
The next hostel was in the national park and we had to pay £15 each for the park which was ridiculous! And we had too share a room with the other couples which was very uncomfortable!! The next day we had to be up at 4:30am! Crazy stuff! We first stopped at some geysers but they didn't go off there was just a lot of smoke and it was freezing!!! We were really high up we actually reached our highest point on the trip according to dans watch we got to over 4700m?! And it was FREEZING!! We stopped off at some hot springs the size of a puddle filled with tourists. We were looking forward to getting in, but at 6am in the cold we decided against it! We wussed out!!
After this we were transfered to the border but we had already gotten our stamp in uyini as apparently this border is sometimes randomly closed?! We then had to get a bus to the Chilean border which was over an hour away! Yay out of Bolivia! I don't think either of us would consider Bolivia one of our favourite countries, the people are just too grumpy!
