We're really loving Siem Reap, and hope the rest of Cambodia will be as great as this place. Our hotel is excellent and does amazing and cheap food and drinks, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. We arrived on Monday afternoon/evening and spent that evening and Tuesday just relaxing and walking around the day and night markets.Everything is so cheap here - it's great, and the prices are in US dollars, as well as Cambodian Riel, so that makes it much easier as there are over 6000 riel to the pound, which is a bit of a ridiculous figure to work with! There is a street in town called 'Pub Street' where you can find bars doing all day 50 cent beers, so about 30p for a half liter glass! I've also found a place that does $2 frozen marguerita's, which are great.I then managed to beat my $5 bottle of red wine by finding a $3 bottle of Chinese red wine.It tastes a bit like ribena though, so won't be getting any more of those!
Yesterday we hired a Tuk Tuk for the day with our friend Sam, who we met at the border, to take us to Angkor Wat and various other temples. Our driver did a great tour for us, and did not try to rip us off or give us any sob stories about how much he earns, which is what others seemed to have experienced. He even gave us free cold water all day, which was great, as it was sooooo hot!We started at 9am and had planned to stay out until sun set, but by about 5pm we were ready to go home and I fell straight to sleep after my shower! It was an exhausting day and quite expensive at $20 each for our passes, but well worth it.We started at Angkor Thom and saw the gate, the Bayon, the Baphuon, the Terrace of Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King. We then stopped at the East Gate and Ta Keo for more photos.By this point we had already run one camera battery down!Next it was to Ta Prohm. This was our favourite, as it had the trees growing into and around the rocks.Next we went to Banteay Kdei and bought some food and drinks from the street sellers. There were so many of them, all trying to get us to their stalls, and then the children come around trying to sell you postcards and bracelets, etc, but they soon got bored when I bought nothing! Finally we went to Angkor Wat, the most famous temple. It was good, but so full of tourists and scaffolding, as they were restoring parts of it.We queued to climb to the top, but were really tired by this point, as we heard it was 46 degrees that day, and it felt it! Apparently they filmed Tomb Raider in these temples, but I've not seen it, so those of you that have may recognize some of the pictures.
Today we are having another relaxing day.We have a massage each booked in an hour's time (only $6 for an hour!) and then we're going to head into town to look at the shops and markets again and have a few drinks. There is also a cinema in the night market, which shows a movie about the history of Cambodia, so planning to go there this evening. We have booked the bus to take us to Phnom Penh in the morning, so we're moving on again and need to find some accommodation when we arrive there.
Hope all is well with everyone,
Maggie x

Maggie Good to hear from you Debs. Yeah, it's been strange not having red wine for so long, I was beginning to forget what it tasted like!
