The 6 hour bus ride to Phnom Penh was pretty bad.Very cramped and bumpy, with lots of kids on board being sick!We found a real backpackers place to stay at.The rooms are not great, but there is a massive communal area set on the lakeside and loads of people always around, so we have made some good friends, but consequently done quite a lot of socialising!
When we arrived, we only made it as far as checking in and getting food, before we met a couple of people from our bus (Ali and Dino) and then started drinking beer, then Bailey's, then we bought a huge bottle of Bacardi between us for $12!So, we had a good night!
Yesterday we relaxed in the morning, then walked around the City, along the river and to the Palace to take photos from the outside. There are some really nice gardens around and they are developing the riverside, so some of it looks good and the rest is a building site!Back at the hostel we watched the movie "The Killing Fields' but the hostel next door was playing really loud music and then the DVD got stuck towards the end, so that was really annoying, but gave us a bit of history ready for today's site seeing.
Today we hired a tuk tuk and first went to the shooting range, as Graham was desperate to shoot a gun!(Must be a boy thing). He got an AK 47 with one magazine (25 bullets) for $40, so spent nearly a days budget in 10 seconds!(We're only paying $5 for our room per night, so this was an expensive attraction). You could fire a rocket launcher for $350, but I said no way at that.We met a guy who did one though, and he was grinning from ear to ear.Graham loved it, as you will see on the videos I took.
After this we went to the Killing Fields, where they executed over 2 million fellow Cambodians between 1975 and 1979 under the Pol Pot regime. It's really hard to believe that this sort of thing has happened in our life time. After this we went to the S21 detention/ concentration camp, which was formerly a high school, where they tortured their captives to confess to things they had not done. It's been a great and informative day, but quite harrowing.
So, we have enjoyed it here, but not as much as Siem Reap.Tomorrow we take the morning bus to Sihanouk Ville down on the south coast.Only a 4 hour bus journey, so should be there by lunch time, and hopefully be on the beach in the afternoon!
