Waking up to drizzly fog in California! Really?! We've driven through a tree, climbed inside a tree and happened upon a herd of Roosevelt Elk (endangered) at the roadside. We've had a meander around Arcata this afternoon which is full of hippies and students with dreadlocks. Hence we found a veggie cafe for lunch! After waking up to deer in the hotel car park, we left Oregon and are now just south of the state border in California. Today we have visited Jedediah State Park to witness the massive Redwood Trees, waited for the tide to go out so we could walk to the lighthouse in Crescent City, walked with a few feet of basking Sea Lions and tonight we are staying in a motel made out of one Redwood tree, the Curly Redwood Lodge. We're getting closer to that Californian border. We woke to beautiful blue skies and sunshine and today with not much driving we had a 104 mile jet boat trip up the Rogue River and it was AMAZING! The pilot has a dog called Sadie who hasn't missed a boat trip in 9 years, she is an Australian Otter Spotter, the only one in the world apparently!!! The Sea Lion Caves were our first stop this morning and although the Sea Lions have vacated their cave for the summer months we still saw hundreds of them basking on the rocks and playing in the sea. We then enjoyed our second breakfast at the Hod Rod Diner where cars have been converted into dining booths. It was just like a scene from Grease! Today has seemed like a really long day but the ending has been truly spectacular... Imogen was delighted to find a Hollister Outlet shop and came away with some bargains. Depoe Bay has the smallest harbour in the world and has many naff gift shops along the front.
