Time to explore the Margaret River in a bit more depth so left Bridgewater about 9ish and returned back up Caves Road towards Yallingup, turning off on Wyadup Road to the highly recommended Injidup Point and Beach. Awesome view of and amazingly turbulent sea and coastline. Apparently great swimming particularly up past the Injidup Spa Resort perched on the cliff side. Far too cool and windy for us! On the other side of Caves Road we visited Cape Lavender Tea House for coffee and lavender scone - yum!
Our first winery, also recommended, was Aravina - originally Amberley and certainly was fabulous! Incredibly opulent grounds and buildings with an impressive looking restaurant (chef is from a local highly regarded restaurant, Cape Lodge).
Owner Steve Tobin has a love of cars hence the display of his car collection, all within the cellar door complex. Enjoyed our tasting realising that crowds were building significantly being the Sunday of the long weekend and the start of the school holidays. Not far to stop number two, Clairault. Not as large a concern but pleasant grounds and well set up with interesting food menu. Our next stop was the large Tuscan looking establishment of Driftwood. Met the interesting Greek owner and tried a few wines though had the feeling it may be struggling more, despite its extensive gardens and own amphitheatre (?!). Unfortunately they are currently without a chef so no restaurant operating. Stop number four, Flying Fish Cove, Raym had wanted to visit as James Halliday had recently given some accolades. Small cellar door operation as plant and main area located further away. No restaurant or extensive grounds but staff great, and a Penfolds connection from the past!
By this stage hunger had set in so we headed to our next stop, Hay Shed Hill. Great grounds, fabulous set up and fortunately after a short tasting we were able to secure a table for a delicious lunch (pizza and cured salmon wrapped around a eggplant hommus). After lunch braved the crowds at a couple of food outlets (pretty crazy!) and visited the Margaret River Chocolate Co, The Providore, Bettenay's Nougat and the Margaret River Dairy Co for a few cheeses. Managed to pass through the unique little town of Cowaramup with all it's strategically positioned colourful cows! Very little time left before closing (5pm) so quickly squeezed in the well know Vasse Felix. Extensive vineyards, the oldest in the region, and beautiful grounds and cellar door. Great way to finish off a full but enjoyable day. Back to our little room for a quiet drop (Vasse Felix Sav Blanc) and some cheese! Early night for us!
