Mumbai is CRAZY. Amazing, but crazy.
Just flying into the airport was something to be bewildered by. The plane flew closely over shanty town which were right next to the airport fields like in Slumbdog Millionaire. We got to see a lot more places like this.
Getting to the hostel was also a bit of a shock... Only because it was in a back alley and in somebody's own apartment. We had looked at the website at the pictures and the hostel looked nothing like what it is. It is just somebodys home as I am sure one of the people who works there sleeps on the sofa. It is nice albeit with a good atmosphere as everyone who is staying is very friendly. Plus we get to see a proper indian house almost, with a religious shrine on one of the cupboards.
We went out for a tour with a local cab driver (2.50 pounds for 7 hours, what a deal) and saw Mumbai with some people from Oxford who were very nice and friendly. It is a very crazy place, with Shanty towns directly next to Luxury malls. Chickens, goats and cows just laying in the middle of the pavement. Oh yeah, and everybody doesn't refrain from using their honker in the car. There are marked lanes in the road, yet, they don't use them. They just get in nearest space. A few times cars and bikes from the other side of the road, overtook us to go down the one way street.
We went to a park where there was a building which was a shoe. Very cool. We also got to see the beach skyline of Mumbai. We went down there and saw the grand Gate of India, which symbolised the end of colonialism and stuff. Also next to it was the taj mahal hotel where the shootings happened last year.
Hopefully tomorrow we'll see the station. It looks very impressive and is a world heritage site. It was also used in slumdog millionaire.
