Today we got picked up along with 12 other people from different locations and taken to a Thai cottage cooking school. When we arrived we got to pick 4 different dishes to cook and then got taken to a local market to get the ingredients. She gave us differing spices, fruit, vegetables and herbs to smell while we watched cockroaches jump in and out of the different jars of stuff and scurry around our feet. So it was right when the ad said we got a true Thai Market experience. We then headed back and each got a station with a chopping board and massive sharp knife and a towel. She told us we all had 10 fingers and she wanted us all to have 10 fingers at the end so please be careful with the knife as the hospital in Chiang Mai isn't open on a Sunday…… she said nothing about insurance.
Between the 2 of us we cooked a variety of dishes including Hot and Sweet Prawn Soup, Chicken Soup, Chicken Pat Thai, Stir Fried Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Spring Rolls, Red Thai Curry and Green Thai Curry, and got to eat them all mmmmmmm. At the end we got given a certificate to say we had passed and a cook book with all the recipes so we can do it ourselves at home. We then headed back to the guesthouse and grabbed some food ready for the sleeper train before being taken to the train station to see what joys the next sleeper train would bring.
