After leaving the boat we headed back to the hostel to get our gear. The queue at reception was massive to get our passports and laptop back so we headed to the kitchen first to grab the food. We then got back to reception and it was still busy so after 5 minutes I sent Rachel off to put the food in the cool box in the car. She was gone age's then I saw her walking down the street with two 50c McDonalds ice cream in her hand, mmmmmmm, that's my girl. We still carried on waiting and finished the ice cream. I then left to get our rucksacks from the store cupboards and when I came back Rachel was still waiting. We waited another 5 minutes then I went to dump the rucksacks in the car. Finally Rachel appeared after we had waited around 40 minutes. She said they nearly didn't give it back as they wanted to see photographic ID which was in the safety box lol, she managed to talk them around in the end.
We finally got on the road and drove south making a quick stop at a shopping centre for Rachel to pick up a new bikini…..she had got me an ice cream after all. We then continued until we got to a place called Mackay after searching for a while we found a campsite, we headed for reception and asked for a pitch. She said she had 1 left and took our money. Then she led us to the pitch, we pulled the car in and had a look at the grassy pitch area to the side of where we had to park the car, we tried not to laugh at the pitch that was less then a meter wide. We went back and said the pitch wasn't big enough and she said 'oh, you have a big tent do you'. I thought no its not a big tent but there's 2 of us so its obviously bigger then a 1 man tent which is the only size that would have squeezed in the spot. Thankfully she gave us our money straight back.
We decided to continue on our way and stopped off at a nice little campsite in a town called Sarina. It was very friendly and while we were having dinner in the kitchen area some locals came to join us and had a chat which was good apart from they were eating fish and chips which looked delicious, while we were having our usual pesto pasta mmmmmmm.
On Saturday the 26th we had a bit of a lie in then packed up and headed south towards a town called Townville. We stopped off at the tourist info place and said we had a day and wanted a campsite on the outskirts of town and asked for there advice on what to do. Her advice was to leave town and carry on south towards a place called Bundaberg. Considering there own tourist information person didn't advice anything in town we quickly came to the conclusion that it might be best to carry on. We headed back to the car and on the way we heard someone say 'hello' we turned around and saw a couple of parrots called Jake and Clyde, we stood talking to them for a bit, getting them to say hello lots then decided to get the camera out and video it…..you guessed it the second we get the camera out the refuse to speak, so we finally gave up put the camera away and….. yes you guessed it they start saying 'hello' again. Typical, I guess they were just camera shy.
We stopped off in town briefly to top up supplies at 'Coles' then headed on down south. After around 3 hours we finally got to a place called 'Seventeen Seventy'. It was a lovely little place where we stayed in a campsite which was about 5 meters from the sea. We pitched the tent and then set up the stoves and had a treat of a dinner, yes it was pesto pasta again but this time we treated ourselves and had tuna and Butterbeans with it lol.
We then sat chatting and sorting bits out for a bit before we headed to bed. Oh and also two American couples invited us over to sit with them…… only joking i'm sure if you guys are reading this you want more then that. We were sitting minding our own business when we overheard our neighbours discussing whether they could be bothered to go all the way to the toilet or just go on our tent. They invited us over to join them, which we thought we should so that we could keep an eye on them, and make sure they didn't use our tent as a toilet hehe. We had a nice evening chatting with them about our travels and finding out what brought them to Oz. We had a good laugh it was nice to have some company for the evening. We look forward to hearing from them on our message board - remember if you can't be nice, be honest! Hehe!
The next morning we went to do a quick walk by the sea, but when we got to the beach the tide was in so we decided to just set off driving. We drove to a place called Bundaburg and had a lovely walk by the sea looking at several beaches, one of which was called 'Kellys Beach'! We had a quick picnic by the sea (and resisted icecream!) and got back in the car. We drove a little further to a turtle area which was closed, but the visitor area was open to read about the centre and how they help protect turtles. Unfortunately we realised we'd missed an evening walk to see the turtles laying eggs which was a shame. We popped back in the car and drove on to Hervey Bay and arrived at our hostel for the night.
