I'm writing this on the 4th night. A combination of being exhausted and not having wifi in our hotel has made me not really get around to it until now. We got to our hotel at about 5am on Friday and were lucky enough to get an early check-in, but even with that we were only able to get about an hour of sleep before we had to get up to head to the showgrounds of PAX.
When we got there the doors had yet to be opened and there were hundreds of people milling about, in what turned out to be some kind of huge winding line. Luckily we somehow found ourselves near the front of it without really realising. In the end we were inside after only about 15 minutes. Just in front of us in line was a guy in a Master Chief outfit. It was awesome, but so bulky that he could barely move. There was a lot of great cosplay on display over the 3 days. I didn't really get many photos, but Dane was willing to stop almost everyone of them walking by to take one. Maybe I'll get some of his photos if I can.
The first impression of PAX as we entered the main expo hall was that it was huge and there would be so much to do. By the end of the first day we were actually already wondering what we were going to do for 3 full days. Being the first one in Australia it turns out that not very many big names actually made the trip. The two biggest booths there were World of Tanks and League of Legends, neither of we any of us really care about. Outside of that was quite a few indie booths and a s*** load of booths demoing headphones.
There was a small Total War: Rome 2 booth doing live commentary over a trailer I had already seen online. There was a booth where you could play about 5 minutes of Saints Row IV which was awesome as this was just about the only booth allowing you to play a yet to be released game.
Ubisoft was the only major publisher with any real presence. They had running presentations of several games including Watch Dogs as well as a bunch of consoles setup to play the new Splinter Cell game as well as several of their lesser titles.
The highlight though for me was having the chance to use the Oculus Rift. This was the one thing I was really hoping would be there as it's the one thing you can't experience from watching videos of. And it was totally awesome. The grid pixelation effect that I had read about was certainly a large problem unfortunately, but that should hopefully be resolved in the retail version which has a higher resolution. But as far as VR goes, this is the best so far. Having your full vision used and being able to look around naturally really made you feel more immersed in the game.
So overall, we got to do pretty much everything we wanted. But it look hours of lining up for most things. Hopefully in the future there will be some bigger names and possibly a better suited venue. Now hopefully tomorrow I can find somewhere with free wifi so I can actually upload this.
