Zaragoza was somewhat of a surprise. Another place I had never heard of that we really only went to because of a guy we met in Bilbao who offered us a place to stay. I was more than happy to do this because our plan was to catch an 8 or so hour overnight bus from Bilbao to Barcelona. Which for some reason I seem to keep doing despite the fact that I hate taking overnight busses. But as a result of this we now had a 2 hour ride with a guy through Blablacar follow by a 4 hour bus ride to Barcelona a few days later.
It turned out to be a really awesome place. It had an awesome basilica and heaps of awesome Roman ruins. It use to be a Roman city named after Augustus Caesar and has an old Roman wall, theatre, baths and other such ruins. We get dropped off near the centre of the town and before we knew it we spotted some guys in pointed hats, and then came the drumming. Turns out we arrived on the day of their Easter processions. And these ones went basically non-stop all day. Actually I think it went for the better part of two days. Everywhere we would go there would be a procession somewhere in the city. You couldn't escape the sounds of drums and trumpets. It was pretty cool. Sometimes we would come to an intersection where one procession had stopped to let another pass. They were all over the place. At one point we came upon a group who had clearly just finished their procession as they were all standing outside a bar drinking and smoking which we found to be quite a humorous end to a religious ceremony.
Of the four Roman ruins that could be visited we only had time to visit the theatre. It was pretty damn good as far as Roman ruins go. The other thing of real note that we did was visit the origami museum. Wow! Never before had I imagined just how complex and intricate origami could be. All the different styles and methods, it's insane. There was also a palace/castle which we didn't really quite get the time to see. We got to see some of the outside of it as we walked to the bus station but that was it. It certainly looked like something that would have been worth visiting though. Oh well, always leave yourself wanting more eh?
Unfortunately even though it was DC who had invited us to stay at his place, we barely got to hang out with him. On the day we arrived he was out of town and didn't get in until after we had gone to sleep. Because of that, he also didn't wake up the next morning until we were already out doing stuff. We got to hang out with his housemates a bit and they were totally cool, but we were too exhausted at the end of each day to really do anything. Spanish people don't go out partying until at least midnight and we were always already done for the day by then. Eventually on the day we were leaving DC took us down to a awesome park he likes to hang out at with an huge statue of some king and some cool fountains. Now I don't think I've mentioned this, but me and Ness have had this thing on our trip where for some reason fountains are pretty much never on anywhere we go. Well the fountains in this park were on... that is until we showed up. As soon as we got within 10 metres of the fountains they turned off and didn't come back on. What's the deal? Anyway, it was a nice park, just a shame we didn't get to hang out with DC any longer.
