I can't remember where, but at some point I learned about a crypt in Rome which is decorated using human bones. So on Thursday that's where I decided to go. It was a Capuchin crypt which had a small museum about the history of the order. It was actually quite fascinating and I learned that it is from this order that we get the word cappuccino because the coffee is the same colour as their robes. And the crypt itself was really cool. The bones from something like 4000 bodies were used to decorate it and the artwork was actually really well done. It is something really that only photos can do justice for.
After that I headed to the Trevi fountain which was basically just around the corner. It was a pretty cool fountain I suppose. Nothing mind blowing though. Can't really remember what I did that night. Probably a pretty similar thing to most nights; went to the Yellow and had dinner and drinks.
On Friday I went back to the Vatican to hopefully this time get inside St Peter's Basilica. But when I got there the line was enormous. I thought for sure I'd be waiting several hours. Turns out that it moved surprisingly quickly and within half an hour I was in. Now this is supposedly the largest cathedral in the world. It definitely was pretty huge, and quite impressive, though not as much as the one in Milan I don't think. I decided to pay for a ticket to go up to the dome too which was really worth it. The view was amazing and it was really the only place you could actually see most of the Vatican outside of that central plaza area. The view over Rome was awesome too. You could walk along part of the Basilica roof too which was really weird. The roof on top just didn't look at all like you'd think when you're on the inside. It even have a souvenir shop up there.
After this I had a bit of a walk along the river to a Gelato place that everyone had kept recommending. It was pretty delicious though I'm not sure it was really that much better than most other Gelato I've had.
On Saturday I caught a train to Florence. I hadn't yet booked any accommodation as I was still hoping that I could get a Couchsurfing host as I had sent out a good dozen or so requests over the last few days though all but a couple had already replied saying they couldn't host me. But I was still optimistic that when I got to Florence I'd have an acceptance waiting in my email.
