It was quite late when I got to Budapest on Thursday. I took the metro from the train station and when I got to the door of the hostel I got there just as another guy did. The door had a keypad and on the side was written Please Press and then a bit below that the number 11. Now the house number of this place was 11, and the directions I had said to press the bell. So we were both thinking there was some bell to press on or around the "Please Press" text. But we couldn't find it. We're pressing in random stops and putting in random numbers on the keypad. Now perhaps the more intelligent of you out there have already figured out that we had to in fact type in 11 on the keypad. We were both tired and incorrectly assumed that was just there as the street number,
After we settled into our room we went out to get some dinner. We had no idea where we were going so we just wandered. The place we ended up eating at was called the GreenPub and as it turned out this was the best place I found in Budapest. Over the next few days I would realise that it had serving sizes twice as large as other places for half the cost and the quality was just as good. So that was indeed an awesome place to stumble upon.
On Friday I didn't do a whole lot. Just wandered around for a bit. Didn't really see much of anything. That night I went to one of the ruin bars which Budapest is famous for. This one was called Szimpla and the place was huge. Basically these ruin bars are built in old run down buildings. This was two stories and just as you thought you got to the end it would branch off into another few rooms. There was like 8 bars in the place and every little room had it's only theme. I was there with a German guy from the Hostel and ran into a bunch of English guys and girls who were in Budapest for some forensic seminar.
One one point there was a girl coming around selling carrots. Now don't get me wrong, these were some damn good looking carrots. Nice and big and very healthy looking. But when I'm out drinking in a bar, I'm not really thinking "damn, I could go a carrot right now". So that was a little weird. Later on in the night we were smoking from a Shisha waterpipe (Hookah) which were dotted around the bar on various tables. This particular one had an apple on top and tasted pretty damn good.
Saturday was finally the day I got out and saw some of the touristy stuff. I walked along the river. Saw the Parliament building which unfortunately surrounded by construction work (construction workers hate me or something). Got some nice photos of the bridges. Then went to the basilica which was pretty awesome. I went up to the dome and got some good views over the city. Then I went back to the hostel and basically just chilled with some beers.
