USA 2016
Leaving Waco, Texas we made the decision to bypass Dallas and Fort Worth and head direct to Memphis, Tennessee. We could have taken the interstate highway all the way but instead took some of the lesser highways (all four lane other than a very short section) which took us through rural Texas and the smaller towns. It is so much more interesting. We have no doubt that Halloween is about to be celebrated - lots of shops, churches and houses have decorations on display. Our distance to travel was around 900 kilometres and we decided to break our journey part way in Malvern, Arkansas - random choice but Peter had worked for many years in Malvern in Melbourne so seemed the perfect place to stop. As usual when we are travelling we overnighted in the local Walmart car park. We have an app on the I-pad which lists all the Walmarts that allow overnight parking for RV's which is certainly very helpful so I make a choice in the morning and put that address in the GPS before we head off. When we get there we make a choice, stay or move on depending on the time of the day, size of car park and facilities etc. The app allows for feedback so I can check the appropriateness (number of trucks using the car park, where to park, friendliness, security etc) before making an initial choice. Now we have done a number of activities in Memphis but I thought I would write a separate update on our visit to Graceland - the previous home of the King of Rock, Elvis Presley. Though born in a small city in Mississippi in 1935 Elvis shifted with his parents to Memphis, Tennessee when he was about twelve to live in one of the public housing areas. He soon became inspired by the blues in the local clubs and was "discovered" by a local studio. By 1957 he was already famous and at 22 years of age he purchased for $US100,000 what was to become his final home. We booked ahead as many hundreds of people visit every day. The tour starts in the posh visitors centre and then you are provided with an I-pad and headphones and taken by shuttle bus across the road up the winding driveway to Gracelands, which is now listed as a historic home in the USA. The tour is self guided and although you can take as long or short a time as you wish it is recommended at least 3-3 1/2 hours. The I-pad provides a commentary with many additional interactive options to get additional information, listen to and watch film clips, hear songs, etc. The audio narration comes with the voices of Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa Marie as well as a narrator. It is extremely well done and leads the visitor all the way through the house and grounds telling when to turn right and left, climb stairs, etc. Only the ground and lower ground floors are open to the public with the bedrooms etc upstairs remaining private, and we understand not furnished etc now. The tour of the grounds includes the reflection garden where Elvis and his parents, and grandmother are buried. There is also a small plaque remembering Elvis' stillborn twin. There were no other children. Our tour included viewing and entry into the two custom airplanes and also the Elvis Presley automobile museum, the archives which includes many of the outfits worn by Elvis during his shows, and there are a couple of smaller exhibits showing his films etc. It was a Sunday and as the day moved on the crowds became bigger and bigger. There are a number of souvenir shops, and of course the customary food outlets all designed to empty the wallets of the visitor. To capture the whole experience visitors can stay in the next door Heartbreak Hotel (which is looking quite dated now) or stay in the Memphis Graceland RV Park and Campground. We chose not too as reviews were sadly not the best. We felt that the whole experience was well presented and I guess if you only have time for one experience in Memphis, then this should be it. We really enjoyed our visit.
