Gibbs Locates
We reach the Santana Beach Resort and go to check in. We cant as it's 8.40am and we have to wait until midday. we're pretty tired as we havent slept in about 24 hours. The nice man at the desk says to us that we can go into the restaurant and have a complimentary breakfast while we wait. This being India, I repeat his kind offer to clarify that we can have a complimentary breakfast free of charge while we sit it out. Yes, he tells us emphatically, I repeat the same sentence and get told "No problem'. Breakfast was quite nice, coffee, omelettes and vegetarian cutlets etc....great. Then an hour later I get presented with the bill - "That will be 500 Rupees , good sir". We dont need this, we're dying on our feet. I explain to the restaurant guy about what I was told......off he goes and then comes back saying that no one told us we could have a complimentary breakfast. This goes on for another hour back and forth. In the end, I tell them that I'll pay for breakfast and wont bother checking in, there's plenty of other places round here. Of course it's a complimentary breakfast sir. Feeling jittery and knacked, I'm just thinking this place is going to be a pain and we'll have to be on our guard. It doesnt turn out to be like that here, but it wasnt the best of starts.
Eventually we check in and the room is big, AC, fans, TV, big beds and very clean. Grant is tired out and manages to crash. I'm too tired to sleep and sit on the balcony, hallucinating...or am I? I'm watching about 8 rats climb the coconut trees in the compound opposite and then jump over to the next coconut tree.
We got up a few hours later and went to get some grub down at the restaurant, and very good it was too. Indian, Goan and usual British stuff on offer. It's Chicken Tikka masala and some chilli Beef for us. Works out about 10 pound with a few beers. Not bad but makes me wonder how much cheaper it is out on the streets. We wont find out tonight but take a walk on the beach instead. We cant make much out in the dark but there are a few packs of stray dogs walking around. This can be a problem apparently. We find a restaurant on the beach and watch the white waves breaking in the darkness. All in all it hasnt been a bad first day. It's not a difficult introduction to India. it could have been worse.

Simon Willcox Looks like you finally made it Paradise lost? Milton rocks? Really enjoying the blog, not sure how long your planning to stay in Goe, here’s the whats on, but know is a difficult place to ever leave. http://www.whatsupgoa.com As your not sending photo’s yet, for Grant and your followers here’s some scenic views from Goe http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g297604-Goa-Vacations.html Hola from cold San Diego!!
jaynelove OH MY GOD !!! Thought I always wanted to sit on the beaches there ......but one thing I can’t do as you know is rats....Argh!!!!
Gareth Gibbs I agree with dear Jayne. Rats and me don’t mix. I remember that on my first visit to Florida in 1976 I saw rats jumping along the beer crates opposite the bar I was leaning on. Like you I thought I was hallucinating. I mentioned it to the taxi driver taking me to the theatre the next day. "Yeh, well the place is pretty old - built in ’56" ’1856, I inquired’? - "No, 1956"!!!!
Ma Gibbs Glad to hear that you have landed in a pleasant place, for a change. The rats in the trees are FRUIT rats, we had them in our yard in Florida! Lots of love to Grant, he has handled it all so well. Luv Ma XXXXXXXXXX
