Arrived in El Pont de Suert about 600 kms from our last night in Comillas. Very different part of Spain from a green seaside town on the north coast to a village in the middle of the Pyrenees, the mountain ranges that border Spain and France. Many castle ruins on hilltops and driving down through the Rioja area, vines as far as you can see. Although it was very dry away from the northern coast.
We had a relaxing time in Comillas and we needed to as we have three 600 km days heading down Spain and across France to the lakes district in Italy. Highlight was a visit to the Altamera Museum, dedicated to the cave paintings that date back 18000 years. They no longer allow visitors into the cave, but have created amazing recreation that is so realistic, you could be in the cave itself. Again like much of northern Spain, loads of fishing villages and beaches with a very active beach culture. Lots of campers with surfers from other countries in Europe, particularly Germany.
We have been eating very local over the last 4/5 days away from the larger cities and it has been wonderful and quite inexpensive. Tonight ate at a local bar with the waitress also cooking and had tapas, wine and beer for 15 euro a couple. Wonderful.
Coming up through the foothills of the Pyrenees was a great drive with about 15 tunnels and amazing bare rock faces and cliffs. Absolutely fantastic bike riding roads.
Tomorrow into France with an overnight stay at Orange and then to Lake Maggiorre in the Italian Lakes.
