Getting lost while exploring
The day started with my first IHOP experience, they don't do a small or healthy breakfast. French toast with banana, strawberry, sauce, cream & maple syrup. Delicious!
After yesterday's shoe dilemma it was my mission to find new boots and as it was an even colder high of 6 degrees, I would also search for a new coat. We decided today we would head to Wall Street and while there I would visit Tiffany's. On our walk there I spotted a little shoe store where I found a pair of flat ankle boots which were wide at the toe and super comfy. Plus, they were $100 down to $62, sold! Now to find a coat.
On our walk to Wall Street, we saw a group of roughly 10 Jews all dressed in black. Very quickly swarms of Jews came from all directions and I tried to discretely take a few photos. A man saw my attempts and laughed "if you want a photo, wait a bit and there will be more of us". I asked what they were all doing and he explained they were all gathering at Wall Street for a mass prayer. I asked how often they did this, thinking it must be a regular NY occurrence, and he said it was the first ever time. Police were conducting crowd control and said there were about 40,000 Jews gathering. It was quite a sight and I can't imagine we will ever see that many Jews in one location ever again, but meant we couldn't access a lot of Wall Street.
We had lunch & decided to head to the World Trade Centre and 9/11 Memorial. As we were leaving we stumbled across Tiffany's, which I was devastated to discover was closed on Sundays.
Was good to visit the World Trade Centre and see the new One World Trade Centre building which at 1,776 feet tall, is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Last time Sam visited NY they were laying the foundations so he was amazed to see it now.
Next, we returned to Times Square in search of a coat which would be easy peasy considering the weather conditions......wrong! I was the only one in Times Square/the state of New York that wasn't wearing a coat because it was freezing, but it was apparently impossible to buy one since the stores only had summer stock. Ridiculous! Finally, I found a thick jacket at H&M which is slightly too tight but would do the job and was an unexpected bargain when it rung up at $30 at the checkout.
As we were leaving Times Square and heading to the subway a man started haggling us about a comedy show and really ticked Sam off when he assumed we were Australian. We had the same thing the previous day by about 10 different dudes, but this guy was persistent and we eventually stopped to hear him out. His name was Jeffery and he was hilarious. He had us sold pretty quickly and we booked two tickets for the 10.15pm that night.
I may have lied in my first post......I had another hot dog! I was hungry and they are good and cheap.
Prior to the show, we had Shake Shack. Burgers, wine & beer.
The show was called Hard Knock Laughs at Stand Up NY. It was $20 a ticket plus a two drink minimum. This is a MUST if you visit New York! It was a small intimate show, we were sat in the centre of the front row & apparently Sam "laughs like a black man" because his whole body shakes.
