Getting lost while exploring
Big day of flying and airports, roughly 28 hours. Could not for the life of me sleep on the 16 hour flight from Auckland to LA, despite taking a sleeping pill. Sam did his usual airport floor sleeping gig in LA, while I looked after the bags. An American woman thought he was going to miss his flight to Chicago when everyone else at our gate had boarded & was trying to wake him "Sir, sir, excuse me sir you need to wake up" I laughed and told her he wasn't on that flight. He was sound asleep and missed it all. Arrived in Mexico City via LA with no hiccups. Was really easy to get through customs and order a taxi, although our lack of Spanish was obvious. The taxi driver was really helpful and tried to get us as close to our hotel as possible, because it is pedestrian access only. The staff at our hotel are really friendly. Our hotel the Best Western Hotel Majestic is quite flash and has beautiful colourful tiles everywhere and stunning spiral staircases. We got my request to get a view of the Zocalo from our room. We have large windows that open right out & have a view of the whole square, which is prime position for people watching. Heaps of police everywhere, not sure if that should make us feel safer or question why?! We will go with safe. Had a pretty quiet chilled first night cause we were so tried, had our first delicious Mexican meal and wandered around the city. Then headed back to the hotel and got some ice cream from the parlour downstairs. Watched Spanish Masterchef and the voice for the while. There was a large crowd of people marching out the front of the Zocalo with candles, not sure what that was about. Then fell swiftly asleep and woke up at 11pm feeling like I was ready to get up. So far loving it.
