Getting lost while exploring
We had breakfast at Dots Diner which was just down the road and was recommended by the campground staff. It was super cute! We sat at the bar and watched the kitchen staff who were flat out busy. The waitress poured us a cup of bottomless coffee and took our orders, best & cheapest breakfast so far. Even brought a novelty Dots Diner bobble head.
Drove to view Destrehan Plantation which was built in 1787 and is the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. Then drove to Planation Alley in Louisiana where plantations line the Mississippi River. We took a guided tour of the big house at Oak Valley Plantation in Vacherie. It has a quarter mile of arching live oaks which were planted over 300 years ago. The house was built in 1839 and has been used in movies such as Interview with the Vampire.
The tour was good and gave the history of the house owners etc. Most of the mirrors in the house had join lines where they had been put together. The tour guide explained that this is because the mirrors had been imported and the original owners would've been taxed on mirrors over a certain size and to avoid the tax they cut them.
After the guided tour we took a self-guided tour of the stunning grounds and the rebuilt replica slave quarters, which were tiny. There were several displays that provided general information on how the slaves were treated and lived but it was a shame that there wasn't much information on the slaves that worked and resided here. There was documentation that showed the lengthy process it took to free one of the slaves, who chose to stay and earn money to buy his wife. He and his wife remained on the plantation until their deaths because they were not free until later in life and their children remained enslaved.
Afterwards, we started driving towards Texas. I was very excited to have my first Walmart experience. One of the staff members that assisted us had the gum between her front top teeth pierced and loved our accents. I got a five pack of caramel creme eggs for $2.88. We got the chocolate eggs, Pringles, two pillows, three towels, honey mustard sauce, turkey breast slices, an aux cable, pita bread and skittles for $35.66. We officially became people of Walmart when we prepared and ate lunch in the car park.
