Getting lost while exploring
Woke up during the night boiling and discovered that the hostel had turned the heat on full. Jumped down to the bottom bunk and took off a layer of clothing.
Woke up to a white out. Knew immediately that it wasn't likely that we would be flying anywhere today. Checked online and sure enough, our flight had been cancelled.
Sat on hold to American Airlines for 20 minutes and was told that the flight was operated by US Airlines and they would connect me to them. Was on hold for 40 minutes and then got disconnected. Rang the company that we booked our flights through which involved more holding and they said they couldn't refund us or put us on another flight. They put me through to US Airlines to see what they could do for us. After 50 minutes of holding I gave up and we accepted that flying wasn't an option and neither was a refund.
Looked into trains, buses and car rentals. Found that renting a car would be our best option and rang around rental companies to find most of them were sold out of vehicles or charged a $500 one way fee. Got through to Hertz who had a car and were reasonably priced. Packed up our belongings and attempted to hail a cab in the snow.
Driving out of the Hertz car park was a scary experience. Sam drove and was getting confused as to what side of the road he needed to be on and there was so much snow on the roads. Didn't take him long to adjust to the steering wheel being on the left and driving on the right.
Hadn't eaten yet so hit the road and stopped to get subway for breakfast at midday. Ordering subway over here is harder than you would expect, it's honestly like I speak a different language!
We only almost crashed once! We took turns driving and in the early hours of the following morning when we had almost reached Miami we stopped at a rest stop to sleep for a few hours.
All up the drive was 16 and a half hours & covered 1700 km's (was longer because of numerous wrong turns).
Met a man from Escape Campervans who was wearing a Hawaiian shirt at the Miami International Airport which looked like a run down s***hole from the outside. Collected our wicked camper-van and at his advice headed to Florida Keys which was another 3 hours and 40 minutes & 260 km's. Googled camping sites and went with Boyds camping ground which is in Key West as it was the southernmost point of continental USA.
Arrived and they described our tent site that was available as primitive. Which it certainly wasn't. Cooked our first home-cooked meal of chicken and salad which was a refreshing change from the **** we had eaten over the past two days on the road.
Had an early night on our new temporary bed which is a massive upgrade from the hostel in Washington. Hopefully we get some good weather tomorrow for exploring.
