In the Wet Tropics, water falls out of the sky often. Luckily the rivers and streams cascading from the highlands to the coast spill over terrain that creates natural features in the popular forms of the shimmering lakes and cascading waterfalls which are the stand-out attractions of the region.
We had chosen to join a Barefoot tour for the day with Ro the fantastic tour guide. Even though the forecast was for rain all day we didn't let it get us down. On the bus we got to know each other a little better before reaching our first stop, Lake Eacham, a clear, blue lake surrounded by cool rainforest. Lake Eacham, Crater Lakes National Park is in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and is a maar, a crater lake formed by volcanic explosions. The water was a little nippy but was a great place to swim. We even saw a baby turtle swimming underwater. After our swim we had tea and fruit to give us some energy for the next part of the tour.
We passed through Malanda on our way to Millaa millaa falls also known as the Herbal Essence / Peter Andre waterfall, which is the most Photographed Falls in Australia. These falls are a popular swimming spot - look for the Ulysses Butterfly and Platypus late in the afternoon. It was also our opportunity to recreate the Herbal Essence advert and do our very own hair flick! We even got creative gave it a go with three people at a time. It was a lot of fun.
From Millaa Millaa we visited Dinner falls and Josephine falls which were both great waterfalls and got another opportunity to go for a swim if we weren't already wet/cold enough.
The tour was great and would definitely recommend it to other travellers visiting Cairns and North Queensland.
