After a delayed ferry transfer we arrived at Blue Lagoon Beach Resort and were greeted by the friendly staff. After a quick introduction by Mary about the resort we were able to check in and grab some lunch from the restaurant.
First impressions of the resort - I thought Manta Ray Island Resort was great, this was even better. We were pleased to see we were in an eight-bed dorm without bunk beds. This is defiantly a luxury as a back packer!! There were eight single beds each with their own bedside table, light and plug socket! And to top it off we had beach and bath towels provided (another luxury). It's the little home comforts that you miss!
We headed for lunch, there was a wide selection to choose from and I opted for the honey-glazed chicken, it was delicious! We were definitely looking forward to the BBQ buffet for dinner.
We spent the afternoon relaxing by the swimming pool and reading in the sunshine.
I signed up for the cave trip in the morning instead of opting to go diving as it was fairly expensive and the forecast for the morning was rain and the visibility wouldn't have been the best.
Dinner was fantastic and it went down nicely with a cocktail of the day. The evening's entertainment was a movie; everyone got the chance to vote for either Blue Lagoon or for the Martian. The Martian had the most votes so we enjoyed watching it on the beach on the big screen.
Day 2 - Blue Lagoon
After a good nights sleep I wished we had booked three nights at the blue lagoon resort instead of two.
I had a quick breakfast before I joined a couple of other guests I had met to go on one of Yasawa's unique water based activities - a trip to the Blue Lagoon Caves. The trip departed at 8am and we took the boat for 30 minutes along the picturesque length of Yasawa Islands and past incredible cliffs and beaches.
We approached the island home to a dramatic volcanic peak and hidden beneath at the southern end of Island are the Blue Lagoon Caves. We had to be careful as we entered the first larger cave and we were able to swim within its hidden chambers, linked to the sea by underwater passages.
I would definitely recommend visiting the caves if you spend time on one of the northern beaches in the Yasawa's.
Bobbi and I had our own aqua aerobics session in the pool to burn off our dinner and some of the other guest found it very amusing. That afternoon I was able to call home and would you believe I had the best signal I have had in a month, on a small island in Fiji! It was great to speak to Ben and not have to repeat myself constantly due to intermittent wifi connection!
After we enjoyed a delicious dinner, this evening's entertainment was crab racing. All the proceeds raised went to help the local Fijian school on the island. I selected my crab and it was given a number and then there were three rounds. In the first round, the quickest twenty crabs out of one hundred crabs who made the start line had to make it past the outer circle were collected up and put through to round two. In the second round the 10 fastest crabs qualified for the final. The finally was tense as my crab had made it through to the final ten. Sadly my crab finished in fifth place narrowly missing out on a $50 bar tab!
After all the excitement it was time for bed! With early starts on the islands I struggled to stay up past 9pm!
