George's World Travels
Hi,
So where do I start?!
This weekend has bee great, weekends always are! On Saturday we went to Terelj National Park, about 100-150 k from UB. Was really nice. As youll see from the photos we went to a Buddhist monastry in the hills, some amazing views! Oh yeh, and we had to cross this very rickety bridge. When I walked across I thought itd be fun to liven it up even more by moving it from side to side. I was quickly told this was ver dangerous! When we got to the other side Tugi showed us a sign saying it could only hold up to 4 people at any one time! Very well placed warning! The nails were even coming out of the planks. Was like somehting youd see on one of those chanllenges on 'Im a celebrity, get me out of here...!' but theyd have safety gear!
We also saw the giant rock formation that looks the spitting image of a turtle, hence the photo! We had a mongolian BBQ in one of the gers, the vegetables were lovely-carrots and potatoes. So nice to be out in the countryside again!
Also, Rachel and Victoria, the med volunteers, said they definately wanted to go to the Gobi! So that started the ball rolling and now the trip is taking form. We're going next Saturday! :) for like a week I think. So that means we have a weekend to recover from the jeeb trip back before starting work the next week. Im soooo excited! Its still up in the air a bit though, things here are often finalised the last minute. Frustrating but its just the way. Gotta have faith! We're going so soon coz its Meryls 18th birthday on April 19th and if we'd gone the following week wed miss it, which would be so harsh. (Meryl isnt coming on the trip)
Valerie only thinks itll take like 12 hrs by jeep to get there so that sounds way better than a full 24!
We need to get loads of water supplies and Victoria and I (shes also vegetarian) need to get loads of food, as is all meat out there!
Anyway today I went to the Black Market again. Took some pics (so check them out) was pretty risky taking the camera as theres loads of stories about very forceful and aggresive theives there. But was ok like last time. Bought some goodies. My prized possesion now is my beautiful del. A del is a traditional mongolian coat/dress. Mines more like a dress as is quite fitted. Looks like a kimono really. Same beautiful fabric. Mines light blue. Cost 25,000 T which is about 12.50p! Very expensive out here but have to remind myself of english cost! We then went to lunch at a western restaurant. Had fish and chips :)
So yeh Friday was cool. The film was pretty good. Had to sit right up close to the TV though coz had English subtitles. Have put some pics in of the Buddhist centre and cafe. Was really nice community feel, as loads of English speaking people were there. Next week theres a film about an English runner, made in like 1980 or something. Ring any bells with anyone? Dinner was nice. Had Chinese again. Have I told you about the greatest meal ever? Its scrambled egg and tomato, but really juicy taste. Not what youd expect. Lovely! Club we wnet to after was ok but went home for curfew at 11pm.
Dave and I went to the Natural History Museum the other day, besides from a floor full of rock specimens it was pretty good. There was loads of stuffed animals, even snow leopards and golden eagles! (Some of Myles' favourite animals) also there were voltures, like ones Dave saw in the Gobi-they have such a massive wing span! and moose, theyre way bigger than i thought! The dinosaur section was also very impressive. There wa no sign of a raptor, (like my Lonely Planet said) but there was a 'Mongolian' (ie smaller version) T Rex which was pretty cool. Also lots of dinosaur eggs.
We're meeting tomorrow, with Georgie, a new volunteer (from UK whos going to a Gobi placement next week) to Millies, the great English cafe, that sells the best tuna sandwiches ever! We'll then try to get into the Monastry Museums nearby. On Friday they were closed so fingers crossed. And think on Tuesday-Daves last day, we're gonna go to the National History museum then all volunteers meeting up for dinner in the evening. Good few days. Sorting out stuff bout Gobi trip on Tuesday evening too I think.
Bye for now,
G xxx
